When Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby and Sergeant Troy arrive in the village of Badger's Drift to investigate the sudden death of Emily Simpson, her next door neighbour insists that she had been murdered, after witnessing the elderly woman return home, quite unnerved and shocked about something she had seen. When the post mortem on Emily reveals she was indeed murdered, the pair quickly find themselves attempting to determine what she had witnessed that had necessitated her death, slowly discovering that nothing is what it seems in the sleepy village as they begin uncovering blackmail, sex, and lies that seem to conceal the truth to the case. Matters soon become more perplexing when they suspect a possible connection to a shooting accident that happened one year ago, that led to the death of another woman... When the Midsomer Worthy Writers' Circle gather together to debate on which author to bring into their next meeting as a guest speaker and to discuss with them about the books they are working on, Gerald Hadleigh, the group's secretary, is far from pleased when the majority decide that Max Jennings, a famous writer, should be invited. The morning after Jennings' visit, Hadleigh is found bludgeoned to death in his own home, prompting Barnaby and Troy to delve into his private life. But their investigations are complicated when they find that Max Jennings has disappeared, and that Hadleigh had had a mysterious woman in his house the night he was killed...

When Barnaby and Troy arrive at the Lodge of the Golden Windhorse, a local New Age commune, to investigate the sudden death of one of it's founders, Bill Carter, the pair are uncertain as to whether his death from a broken neck was the result of an accident or a murder. A few days later, the detectives have no doubt about the sudden death of the commune's leader, Ian Craigie, who was stabbed to death during a spiritual seance, with a carving knife, whilst amongst other members of the lodge and the parents of one the group. The detectives find themselves puzzled as to how he was killed without anyone seeing it, and begin wondering if it has a connection to Carter's death...

Whilst investigating the sudden death of Agnes Gray, a quiet animal-loving woman who was found drowned near to the village of Ferne Basset, Barnaby attends the Causton Amateur Dramatics' production of Amadeus to watch his wife perform in it. But both and the audience truly receive their money's worth when Agnes' cousin, Esslyn Carmichael, inadvertently cuts his own throat during the final act. The discovery that the tape on the blade of the prop razor blade had been tampered with, leaves Barnby and Troy wondering who wanted to turn Esslyn's final act into a true coup de theatre, and what the motive is that connects the two deaths...

Local villagers in Morton Fendle are up in arms over news that a local craft centre they had invested in, has recently fallen into financial turmoil, leading to demands for answers from its owner, Alan Hollingsworth. As tensions begin rising in the village, his behaviour suddenly becomes secretive, prompting Barnaby to suspect that something has happened to Alan's wife, Simone, and that she may have been abducted. As he attempts to determine if his assumption is correct, the matter darkens when one of Alan's neighbours is murdered, leaving him and Tory wondering whether she had witnessed something that Simone's kidnappers didn't want her to see...

It isn't long before the pair find themselves dealing with problematic evidence, a detective obsessed with the previous murders, lies and issues in a local family, a tobacco company, and an affair within a local hotel, before another death occurs... Suspicions are soon cast amongst the travellers, but when the leader of one group is found dead, Barnaby is soon determined to find out who truthfully hated Bridges enough to want to kill him...

As secrets start to surface and relationships between the villagers begin to unravel, things take a dark turn when one of the judges of the competition drops dead without warning, poisoned by a glass of wine...

When a tramp is murdered during a fox hunt in the village of Upper Marshwood, the case is quickly solved by Superintendent Pringle shortly before his retirement. Barnaby, who had been in France on holiday during the investigation, is not convinced that the local poacher, who pleaded he was innocent when he was arrested, was the true culprit, and his suspicions are soon proved correct when the poacher's father is found dead at the same place, killed with his own shotgun. Barnaby and Troy soon reopen the murder case, and find themselves dealing with many upper classes who are unwilling to give much away...

Gregory was among four staff members who benefited from Wainwright's will, with the others being his wife, the hotel's chef and its accountant. Shortly after the investigation begins, the other beneficiaries receive death threats, and it's not long before the chef is poisoned with the mushroom, Destroying Angel, while the accountant's husband is crushed by his own drinks cabinet right before the two detectives. It's not long before they find themselves discovering lies, deceptions, and hidden truths behind the murders...

As the detectives determine which of the villagers had a strong enough motive for the murders, they discover that someone had heard 1950s dance music being played in the village shortly before the postman had been murdered...

Shot through the heart and clutching a piece of paper with the words "Ding Dong Bell" printed on it, it is not long before two more bell ringers are murdered, one of whom is shot just as they are married. Barnaby is soon left wondering whether the murders are tied to the upcoming competition, or to an event that occurred at the village's church in the late 19th century...

Things soon become complicated when one of the other book club members is murdered, and it soon becomes clear that the killer appears to be privy to many secrets in the village...

As a proposed development of Setwale Wood is given the go-ahead, despite opposition in Midsomer Worthy, the body of a local farmer's wife, Susan Bartlett, is found dead in the wood. It initially appears that she committed suicide after suffering from depression, but when Barnaby learns that the young Julie Fielding and her younger brother had chanced upon her "sleeping" the day before the body was found, he soon suspects she was murdered. As he and Troy investigate, uncovering lies and stories on witchcraft, the farmer developing the wood is soon found dead...

Just as her husband begins to discover that the victim was not all she seemed to be, officers of the NIS pull him off the case. While Troy is allowed to assist them, Barnaby is left handling a local operation into a spate of thefts, but when a recent theft turns up something in connection to the murder, the detective decides to continue his investigations in secret. In doing so, he soon turns up armed robbery, unaccounted stolen money, former criminals, and secret liaisons, before discovery that the NIS investigation is not being as thorough as it should be....

All accusations by his family for his murder are directed at the residents of rival village, Lower Warden, leading Barnaby and Troy to determine if this is the case, especially when Larry's director, and another member of the family, is electrocuted while using an exercise bike. It's not long before secrets, affairs and blackmail begin to surface from within the two villages...

While there was evidence he was desperately seeking to avoid bankruptcy, and had visited a local millionaire to get back his money from a scheme he had invested in, a post mortem reveals that he had been murdered. The two detectives soon find their investigations crossing over, when a man found to have an illegal collection of bird eggs, is also murdered, prompting concerns that the millionaire's scheme is being used to defraud many, and that someone is willing to kill to keep the scheme going...
