Dame Darcy
Dame Darcy is an alternative cartoonist.[1] Her comic book, Meat Cake, has been published by Fantagraphics since 1993. Darcy has also released several graphic novels, Frightful Fairytales, Dame Darcy's Meat Cake Compilation, The Illustrated Jane Eyre (Penguin 2006),[2] Dollerium (Presspop, 2007),[2] Comic Book Tattoo (Image Comics 2008), Gasoline (Merrell Publishers, 2008) and Handbook For Hot Witches (Holt 2012).
Biography
Dame Darcy is known worldwide as a sequential artist for over 25 years, and has published about 100 books internationally.
Dame Darcy acquired her initial skill set while still a child and teen working as an apprentice to her father in his sign painting studio Green Tree Graphics. She began her own career at age 17 when she won a scholarship to the San Francisco Art Institute where she was taught by George Kuchar. Dame Darcy is now known worldwide as a sequential artist, (cartoonist/ illustrator/ writer) fine artist, musician, and animator/filmmaker.
Her first publishing deal was acquired at the age of 21 with her comic book series Meat Cake published by Fantagraphics Books and is still ongoing. Now with a graphic novel compilation entitled Meat Cake Bible with over 400 pages of comix released in July 2016.
Her comics have been translated into many languages. Japanese, French, Spanish, and Portuguese among others.
She had the pleasure to work with writer Alan Moore of DC comics /Cobweb and others, Marvel comics/The Fantastic Four, Putnam Penguin NYC/ Graphic Novel Jane Eyre, PressPop Tokyo /Dollerium Comix and DVD, Merrell London /graphic novel Gasoline, Comic Book Tattoo /compilation comic with Tori Amos/ Image Comics ,Holt NYC / Hand Book for Hot Witches, Seven Stories Press NYC/ Graphic Cannon comic compilation series #1 #2 #3.
Her latest books in 2016 are Lady Killers / Harper Collins, The Jaywalker with Lisa Carver /Lucky and other compilations. An autobiography of Dame Darcy's life is due out on Feral House in 2017 entitled Hi Jax & Hi Jinx and has a feature film screenplay attached. Her Self published Mermaid Tarot Card Decks sell daily and globally and are also independently distributed through various stores.
She also experienced Illustrating for fashion designers Anna Sui (NYC) and Japanese Gothic Lolita designers, CWC, Baby Doll, Ku, Coi Girl Magic and Jared Gold (LA) etc. While also working as a runway model.
Her teaching experience varies among all ages and contexts, Dame Darcy taught an independent comics publishing course at School Of Visual Arts in Manhattan, as well as lecturing and workshops at Columbia University, Europe, and Japan.
Her films and animation have won awards and shown internationally. Her fine art and dolls have been exhibited and sold in art galleries globally for 20 years plus. Dame Darcy is a life time musican and and cabaret performer her lectures, music, and videos are used in social media to sell her books, and other works.
