Decepticons (gang)
Decepticons or Decepts or Hammer Gang were a 1980s street gang based in Brooklyn, New York named after the villains in the Transformers franchise, the Decepticons.[1]
History
The Decepticons were founded in 1985 at the elite high school Brooklyn Technical High School. [2] At one point in the 1980s, the Decepticons were the largest gang in New York City.[1] Five Decepticons were arrested on a violent attack they committed. In 1988 the Decepticons were charged with 43 robberies, mostly of jewelry and clothing.[3] Their ages varied from 15 to 22.[3] Despite the fact that the gang consisted of fewer than 60 members, their presence in New York City was described as mythical.[3] The leader of the decepticons was eventually shot in the head.[4]
Violence
The Gang was known to play the one punch Knockout game, and rob numbers of people at once. [5]
Deceptinettes
Female members of the gang were known as Deceptinettes.[6] ISIS SAPP-GRANT was a founding member of the Deceptinettes. [7] Isis later went to become a Social Worker, working hard to give a chance to other gang girls.
Terminology
Brooklyn was referred to as Cybertron (the place of its founding).[8]
