Declan Hannon (born 25 November 1992) is an Irish hurler who plays as a left wing-forward for the Limerick senior team.[1]
Born in Adare, County Limerick, Hannon first excelled at hurling whilst at school, winning back-to-back Harty Cup medals with Ardscoil Rís. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Limerick minor team, before later lining out with the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in the 2011 National Hurling League. Hannon has been a regular fixture on the team since that initial appearance, and has won one National Hurling League (Division 2) medal.
Hannon has been called up to the Munster inter-provincial team on one occasion. At club level he has won one championship medal with Adare.
Early life
Born in Adare, County Limerick, Hannon comes from a family that has a strong tradition in hurling. This was mainly influenced by his childhood neighbours and friends (Awh Friends)and local timber merchant Paric "Pootch" Aherne. His granduncle Pat Stakelum captained Tipperary to the All-Ireland title in 1949, the first of a famous three-in-a-row.[2]
Hannon was educated at Scoil Naomh Íosaf where he battled and struggled against childhood obesity before later attending Ardscoil Rís. It was here that he first came to prominence on the hurling field under the guidance of teacher and inter-county hurler Niall Moran. He was one of the stars of the Ardscoil Rís team that secured the Harty Cup title in 2010 following an epic three-game series against reigning All-Ireland champions Thurles CBS.[3] He later lined out in the All-Ireland final against St. Kieran's College, however, Ardscoil Rís were narrowly beaten by 2-11 to 2-8.[4]
In 2011 Hannon was joint-captain of the Ardscoil Rís team that retained the Harty Cup title following a crushing defeat of Charleville CBS. The subsequent All-Ireland final saw St. Kieran's take on Hannon's side for the second year in succession, however, Ardscoil Rís were once again defeated on a score line of 2-10 to 1-11.[5]

After impressing at colleges and underage levels Hannon was called up to the senior team in 2011 and made his debut in the National Hurling League. Limerick defeated Clare by 4-12 to 2-13 in the Division 2 final, giving Hannon his first success in the senior grade but in recent years his form has been horrible along with the teams form .[8] He later made his championship debut against Wexford, scoring nine points in a 1-21 to 2-13 victory.[9]
