Dennis Herrick is an American author best known for his historical novel Winter of the Metal People, which gives the Pueblo point of view about the Tiguex War and the Coronado expedition. The book's subtitle is The Untold Story of America's First Indian War. Much of his writing deals with the American Southwest.

Background

Working most of his career in and around newspapers, he is a former daily newspaper reporter, a former owner and publisher of a weekly newspaper,[1] and an emeritus member of the journalism faculty at the University of New Mexico. He is an infantry combat veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and other awards while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division in 1969. He has been editor of the newsletter for the Vietnam Dog Handler Association [2] since 1999, and is a member of the Western Writers of America.
