Derek Lee Shelton (born July 30, 1970, in Carbondale, Illinois) is the hitting coach for the Tampa Bay Rays in major league baseball and a former professional baseball catcher.

Minor leagues

Playing career

He was a minor league catcher in the New York Yankees organization in 1992 and 1993, playing alongside Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.[1] In his minor league career, he batted .341 with a .428 on-base percentage.[2]

Managing career

He managed Yankee minor league teams for three seasons, in 2000–02, managing Robinson Canó among others, with his teams achieving a .624 win-loss percentage.[2][3]

Major league coaching career

After spending five seasons as the hitting coach for the Cleveland Indians, he accepted a job with the Tampa Bay Rays at the same position after the 2009 season, which he has served in to date.
