Desur is a Town panchayat in Tiruvanamalai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Desur is located at 12°26′N 79°29′E / 12.43°N 79.48°E / 12.43; 79.48.[1] It has an average elevation of 114 metres (374 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[3] Desur had a population of 5156. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Desur has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79% and, female literacy is 60%. In Desur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. The name Desur is Derived from the Name of the King "RAJA DESINGU" who was ruling the Gingee area which is close to Desur.There was a small fort also in Desur which was supposed to have been erected by King Raja Desingu. Many people from Desur have migrated to Chennai and other places, for higher education and livelihood.Desur Shandy used to be an attraction in olden days.Desur has two higher Secondary Schools, one for Boys and another one for Girls.Desur is a town panchayat under Tellar Division and falls under Wandiwash Taluk.Desur used to have a Tent talkies where tamil movies used to be screened.Desur has two lakes.Near by villages are Thirumalpadi having a hill temple of Lord Vishnu, Seeyamangalam of Historic importance in Archeology,Maddam, Thiraikoil,Parvadhampoondi,Paanjarai,Banampattu,Kunnagampoondi,Vedal,Nerkundram,Sevenam,Puthur and so on.
