Dexter is Dead is the eighth novel written by Jeff Lindsay, and the final book in the 'Dexter Morgan' book series about a serial killer who targets serial killers. The book was released on July 7, 2015.[1]

Plot

Dexter is in jail after being charged with alleged pedophilia against Astor and for allegedly murdering two movie stars and Rita in the previous book.

The Miami-Dade Police Department, with the investigating Detective Anderson, is doing all they can to pin this to Dexter - including falsifying evidence and reports. Only Masuoka tries to clear Dexter's good name, but he gets swatted down by everyone from the beat cops to the State Attorney. Deborah decides she wants nothing to do with him any more, and decides to take custody of his kids.

Dexter's brother Brian bails him out of prison and gets him the best lawyer in town - but the lawyer happens to be in the pocket of a very powerful Mexican drug cartel who is after Brian after Brian assumed he had died in a cartel war and stole his money. The cartel tries to kill Dexter multiple times to get to Brian. Eventually they find out the their lawyer was supplying Raul with Dexter's intel, which makes them ambush him, kill him and all the cartel's members, save for one, who is taken by the brothers to a secluded warehouse, where he is severely interrogated and mutilated to get the kids' location and to satisfy their urges.

Once Dexter and Deborah's children are located, Brian, Deborah, and Dexter team up, break onto the cartel guy's yacht, and take the kids back. Deborah and the kids get away, but Brian is killed by a bomb and Dexter is severely wounded by a gunshot, followed by stomp from Raul on the injure. Dexter sets a bomb so there's no evidence left, then jumps off the boat into the water. As he sinks into the ocean, the book leaves it open as to whether Dexter dies or not.
