Eparchies of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North America

The Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Canada (Serbian: Српска православна епархија канадска, Srpska pravoslavna eparhija kanadska) is a Serbian Orthodox Church diocese located in Canada. Its headquarters are in Campbellville, Milton, Ontario.[1] The Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Canada, part of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America, is an integral part of the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate with its See in Belgrade, and accordingly answers to its national church, the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), one of the autocephalous and canonical Orthodox Christian churches. The SOC not only serves communities in Serbia, it also has exarchates and patriarchal representation churches around the world. The Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America is a member of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America.

The monastic tradition has always been emphasized in the Serbian Orthodox Church. There are 18 Serbian Orthodox monasteries in the United States and Canada, including an unaffiliated one in Columbus, Michigan under the jurisdiction of Bishop Artemije (Radosavljević) of the Eparchy of Raška and Prizren and Kosovo-Metohija in exile. Today, the Holy Transfiguration Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Campbellville, Ontario, is not only an important Episcopal Headquarters but a religious center and a spiritual retreat welcoming numerous visitors (Orthodox and non-Orthodox alike). At the time of Georgije Đokić's election as Bishop of Canada, there were six Serbian churches in the country. Under his tenure, that number has grown to 42 parishes (33 affiliated and nine unaffiliated) and almost 150,000 Serbian Orthodox Christians. In Windsor, Ontario alone there are three Serbian church-parishes and three Serbian-initiated Homes for Senior Citizens, General Mihailovich Place, Homeland, and Pillette Green. With more than 190 churches, chapels and sketes in the United States and Canada, the Serbian Orthodox Church has the largest number of monasteries per capita among all other Eastern Orthodox national churches, one for every 11 parishes.

Structure

The four dioceses of the Church in North America are: the Dioceses of Eastern (Bishop Mitrophan), Midwestern (Bishop Longin), and Western (Bishop Maxim) United States and the Diocese of Canada (Patriarch Irinej of Serbia). Bishop Georgije, formerly Bishop of Canada, has now retired in Milton, Ontario.

The Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, during its regular session on 21 May 2009, based on a recommendation of the Episcopal Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America, relative to the restructuring of the existing Dioceses in North and South America, rendered the following decision confirming the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America, according to which the Dioceses of our Church on that territory will be restructured:
