The Roman Catholic Diocese of Novaliches is a diocese of the Catholic Church in the Philippines. Its territorial jurisdiction includes the District 2, 5, and 6 as well as Barangay Old Balara in Quezon City, and 23 barangays in North Caloocan City. The current head of diocese is Bishop Antonio Tobias.

Vision-mission statement

The diocese's aim is to promote catholism and evangelization in the name of Jesus Christ and of the Virgin Mary and transforming the morals and lives by bringing more people to the church. The diocese also has seminaries that fosters aspirants to be priests. The diocese on the other hand has social activities that provides free medical and social services like educational scholarship for the youth and poor residents inside the diocese, as stated on its vision and mission.[1]

History

The diocese was established on December 7, 2002, and was canonically erected on January 16, 2003 from its ecclesiastical province, the Archdiocese of Manila, by Pope John Paul II. Its territorial jurisdiction includes the Northern portions of the cities of Quezon and Caloocan. The seat of the diocese, which is dedicated to Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is located at Regalado Avenue Extension, Fairview, Novaliches, Quezon City.[2]

Statistics

As of May 1, 2012, there were 2,545,398 people in the diocese. There are 1,610,137 baptized Catholics or 63% of the whole population of the diocese. As of October 31, 2008, there were 36 parishes under diocesan clergy and 23 parishes under Religious clergy in the diocese. Members of other Christian denominations include the Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ), which is approximately the biggest group among non-Catholics. There are also Muslim Communities within the vicinity of the Diocese. In 2006, there were 1,190 baptisms.[3]

Bishop of Novaliches

The current Bishop is Most Rev. Antonio R. Tobias, DD., JCL. (born June 13, 194 in San Andres Bukid, Manila). He was ordained as a priest on December 21, 1965 at the Manila Cathedral. He was also ordained as a bishop on January 25, 1983, while serving as the parish priest in Christ the King Parish Church at Greenmeadows, Quezon City. He has been serving as the Bishop of Novaliches, since his appointment on November 25, 2003.
