Diocese of Wessex

The Diocese of Wessex was an ancient Christian diocese in England during Anglo-Saxon times, from 634 to c. 704.

History

The diocese covered most of Hampshire, Berkshire and parts of Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.

The episcopal cathedral see was Old Minster, Winchester, and the first bishop was Saint Birinus.

Around 704, the diocese was split into the diocese of Winchester and the diocese of Sherborne.[1]
