Diogo José Rosário Gomes Figueiras (born 1 July 1991) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Sevilla FC as a right back.
Football career
Born in Castanheira do Ribatejo e Cachoeiras, Vila Franca de Xira, Figueiras spent six years in S.L. Benfica's youth system. He made his senior debuts in the 2010–11 season, on loan at C.D. Pinhalnovense in the third division, which he helped reach the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup.[1]
Figueiras joined F.C. Paços de Ferreira in the Primeira Liga in the 2011 summer, signing a three-year contract.[2] He played his first game in the competition on 28 August, a 0–0 away draw against C.D. Feirense in which he was sent off;[3] in the following transfer window, he was loaned to Moreirense F.C. in division two.[4]
Figueiras returned to Paços for the 2012–13 campaign, contributing with 19 games in 1,665 minutes of action as the club finished a best-ever third and qualified to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its history. Subsequently he moved abroad, penning a four-year deal with Sevilla FC in Spain.[5]
Figueiras made his La Liga debut on 28 September 2013, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 draw at Real Sociedad.[6] In late December, he was handed a four-game ban after severely insulting the referee during a 0–2 home loss against Racing de Santander for the Copa del Rey (1–2 aggregate defeat).[7]
Figueiras scored his first goal as a senior on 16 March 2014, starting and netting his team's last in a 4–1 home win over Real Valladolid.[8]
