Director General (DG) is the head of the Indian National Security Guard (NSG), the federal contingency deployment force that was created to deal with terrorism in India. The DG is selected by the Home Minister (MHA).[1] In the first thirty-one years since its creation in 1984, the NSG has had twenty-eight DGs, with an average tenure of one year and few months.[2] Many DGs have served only a few months, while waiting for promotion to a more desirable post. None of the DGs have had experience in commanding NSG special actions groups, or any other special forces command experience.[2] All the selected DGs have been officers from the Indian Police Service (IPS), as required by government policy. Since the combat units which conduct counter terror operations for the NSG are commanded by the army officers, this policy effectively negates the possibility of any officer with experience in terror operations heading the organisation as its DG.
Director General of NSG is equivalent in rank to a Lieutenant General in the Army, an Air Marshal in the Air Force, or a Vice Admiral in the Navy, all three-star ranks.
The Director General is assisted, for administrative matters, by four Indian Police Service officers of whom two are Inspectors General each for Administration and Headquarters (HQ) who in turn are assisted by Deputy Inspectors General.[3] The Financial Advisor of the NSG has been an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the rank of Joint Secretary and also has Dy Advisors from the Indian Audit and Accounts Service and Indian Civil Account Service.
