Doctor Satan (Weird Tales)

Doctor Satan's first appearance, August 1935
Doctor Satan's final cover feature, May 1936

Doctor Satan is a fictional character originally published in Weird Tales magazine during the 1930s. He was one of the few stars of Villain Pulps. He was created by writer Paul Ernst.

Overview

Unlike many other featured characters who appeared in pulp magazine, Doctor Satan is a diabolical criminal mastermind. He is a wealthy magnate who seeks the ultimate thrill, employing both scientific and occult knowledge in pursuit of this aim. He would commit murder, but in mysterious and imaginative ways.

Appearances

Doctor Satan appeared in eight stories that were originally published in Weird Tales from August 1935 and August 1936.[1] Doctor Satan was also the chief antagonist of the 1940 film serial, Mysterious Doctor Satan.

Collected editions

Robert Weinberg published a five-story collection, Dr. Satan, in his "Pulp Classics" series in 1974. Altus Press issued its The Complete Tales of Doctor Satan in 2013. Both volumes carried Margaret Brundage covers, based on her original Weird Tales covers. The Altus volume also included an essay by Ernst on writing weird fiction, reprinted from the February 1935 Writer's Review.[2][3]
