Dolby Cinema
Dolby Cinema is the name of a cinema concept by Dolby Laboratories.[1] Dolby Cinema is considered the Dolby Laboratories answer to the IMAX theaters.[2]
Dolby Cinema or Dolby Vision projection is currently installed in roughly 10 cinema auditoriums worldwide, plus early Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres. Roughly 100 AMC theaters are expected to be converted by 2024.[3]
History
The first installation was in the JT Bioscopen cinema complex in Eindhoven, Netherlands on 18 December 2014. The second cinema to feature the Dolby Cinema is UCI/Cinesa La Maquinista complex in Barcelona, Spain.[4]
Technology
The cinema concept consist of the Dolby Atmos system for sound and the Dolby Vision projectors, capable of HDRI and HFR in 2D and 3D formats. The first theatres temporarily used 4K laser projectors until the Dolby Vision-capable ones were shipped out in spring 2015.[2] The theatres also feature atmospheric lighting and a dynamic pathway to immerse visitors in the movie experience before the movie has started.[5]
