Dominic Ng (simplified Chinese: 吴建民; traditional Chinese: 吳建民; pinyin: wú jiànmín) is an American banker who is Chairman and CEO of East West Bank in California.

Dominic Ng transformed East West Bank from a small savings and loan association with $600 million in assets and a market capitalization of $40 million, in 1991, into the full-service commercial bank with total assets of $33.1 billion as of March 31, 2016.[1]

Dominic Ng was born in Hong Kong and was an accountant and director of a number of firms before taking up the position of CEO at East West Bank. Named by Forbes as one of the 25 most notable Chinese Americans, he is a frequent speaker on U.S.-China relations, banking and finance.

Background

Dominic Ng is a native of Hong Kong and currently resides in Pasadena, California. Prior to taking the helm of East West Bank in 1991, he spent ten years as a Certified Public Accountant with Deloitte & Touche in Houston and Los Angeles.[2] He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston, an honorary doctor of law degree from Occidental College[3] and an honorary fellowship from Lingnan University in Hong Kong.[4][5]

Career

Dominic Ng serves as independent director on the board of Mattel,[6] Inc. (NYSE: MAT). He is a member of the University of Southern California Board of Trustees.[7] From 2011 to 2014, he served as Chairman of the Committee of 100.[8] From 2005 to 2011, he served on the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Los Angeles Branch.[9] Dominic Ng’s previous board service also includes the Asia Society,[10] Los Angeles Mayor’s Trade Advisory Council,[11] United Way of Greater Los Angeles,[12] PacifiCare Health Systems[13] (formerly NYSE: PHS), Town Hall Los Angeles, The Anderson School at UCLA,[14] and California State Treasurer’s Financial Institutions Advisory Committee (chair), among other organizations.

Business and Community Leadership in the U.S.

Named by Forbes as one of the 25 most notable Chinese Americans[15][16][17] and one of the 100 most influential people in Los Angeles[18] by the Los Angeles Times, Dominic Ng is also known for his business and community leadership. In 2016, Mr. Ng received The United Way Alexis de Tocqueville Award presented by United Way Worldwide that recognizes his exceptional and sustained engagement and philanthropic leadership. [19] He was the first Asian American campaign chair for United Way of Greater Los Angeles in 2000. Centered on promoting the importance of philanthropy and the benefits of supporting high-impact charities such as the United Way, Dominic Ng’s campaign raised record funds,[20] broke a long-standing ethnic barrier, and now serves as a model and best practice for United Way chapters and other charities around the country.

Promote Chinese Culture in the U.S.

Committed to promoting education and understanding of Chinese language, art and culture in the U.S., Dominic Ng has been helping bring Chinese culture and art to major institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), the Huntington Library,[21] the Bowers Museum,[22] and was honored by the USC Pacific Asia Museum in 2014.[23] His vision to bring the best of contemporary Chinese art to a larger audience inspired a groundbreaking collaboration between East West Bank and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) that resulted in a new addition to MOCA’s permanent collection.[24]

Dominic Ng is a frequent speaker on U.S.-China relations, economics, finance, banking, philanthropy and other topics. He has addressed business, political, academic and civic audiences in the U.S. and Greater China, including Boao Forum for Asia,[25][26] China-United States Exchange Foundation,[27] Asia Society,[28] the Committee of 100, Chinese CEO Organization, Federal Reserve Bank, Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, Milken Institute,[29] the United States Conference of Mayors[30] and United Way.
