Don Vaughn is an American DJ, and neuroscientist, and public speaker. His recent album, The Don Vaughn Experiment, featured former 98 degrees singer Nick Lachey [1] and reached #28 on the iTunes Dance Charts.[2] He has performed as a DJ & drummer at SXSW[3] and Sundance.[4]

His perceptual research aims to elucidate neural mechanisms of consciousness and perception. Don has presented his findings on empathy and neuroplasticity in a TEDx talk[5] as well as at Society for Neuroscience [6][7] and DARPA Network Narratives.[8]

Science

Research

Working in David Eagleman’s Laboratory,[9] Don helped discover that brains create perception by integrating peri-dictively, that is, information both before and after an event contribute to our perception of it.[10]

Now, Don is a Neuroimaging Training Program Fellow affiliated with Mark Cohen's Laboratory for Integrative Neuroimaging Technology.[11] Here, he works on developing an integrated-information-based quantified metric for consciousness as well as using machine learning on healthcare data to predict and reduce costs. He has taught Machine Learning at the NITP Summer Course.[12]

Recently, Don and Ariana Anderson received a grant from UCLA’s CTSI Research to develop ChatterBaby, an app that facilitates communication between hearing-impaired parents and their hearing-abled babies. The app facilitates communication between parent and child by translating sound into colored waveforms in real-time, allowing parents to develop a visual intuition of what their and their babies’s speech sounds like. This ’sensory substitution’ will allow parents to not only recognize patterns when their child speaks, but also tailor their own speech patterns to what best allows them to communicate with their child. ChatterBaby is featured in Don’s TEDx talk, but is undergoing more development before public release.[5]

TEDx

Don's gave a TEDx talk at UCLA on neuroplasticity, entitled neurohacking: rewriring your brain.[5][13]

Music

Don’s first album, entitled The Don Vaughn Experiment,[14][15] featured former 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey and reached #28 on the iTunes Dance charts.

Don and David Eagleman created an app, eyeFi [16] which acts as a reverse visualizer, turning video information into sound. eyeFi is an entertainment of a deeper concept the two were exploring on using sensory substitution to overcome visual impairments by translating vision into audio for the blind.

Victoria Vesna, Mark Cohen, Don, and others in the Art-Sci community at UCLA [17] presentated a performance entitled 'brainstorming' at Sonos Studios [18] in Los Angeles. The exhibit explored the effect of music on feelings of connectedness, and how brain activity changed as a result.

Acting/Modelling

Don has appeared on the covers of 002,[19] Health & Fitness and Life + Dog magazine.[20] Additionally, he has worked for Neiman Marcus - Men’s Wearhouse,[21] Adidas,[22] Academy Sports + Outdoors,[22] and Looxcie.[23] He has walked in runway shows for Kiton,[24] Saks 5th Avenue,[25] and Bogosee.

Service

Don is a board-member and active volunteer with The Children’s Music Foundation, teaching disadvantaged children and refugees to play guitar.[26]

Media

Don has made TV appearances on Entertainment Tonight,[27] The Today Show,[28] Nova ScienceNOW,[29] ShapingHOU,[30] Great Day Houston,[31] and Local KPRC.[32] Don has been featured in TIME,[33] 002 Magazine,[19] Cosmopolitan Magazine,[34] Houston Magazine,[35] First Class Magazine,[36] Houston Chronicle,[37] The Daily Bruin,[38] and Culture Map.[39]
