Doom Dooma (Pron:/ˌduːm ˈduːmə/) is a town and a town area committee in Tinsukia district in the state of Assam, India.


Demographics

Doom Dooma is a Town Committee city in district of Tinsukia, Assam. The Doom Dooma city is divided into 10 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Doom Dooma Town Committee has population of 21,572 of which 11,476 are males while 10,096 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.

Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 2423 which is 11.23 % of total population of Doom Dooma (TC). In Doom Dooma Town Committee, Female Sex Ratio is of 880 against state average of 958. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Doom Dooma is around 877 compared to Assam state average of 962. Literacy rate of Doom Dooma city is 85.52 % higher than state average of 72.19 %. In Doom Dooma, Male literacy is around 89.38 % while female literacy rate is 81.15 %.

Doom Dooma Town Committee has total administration over 4,243 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorize to build roads within Town Committee limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.

Etymology

The city was once covered with jungle, mainly populated by elephants. The name, Doom Dooma, sounds like the footfalls of elephants running: "DumDum" .

History

Doom Dooma has its name written in the pages of Mahabharata as, the Doom Dooma river which flows through the heart of the city is mentioned as the drain connected to the bathroom of the mighty Bhima, of the Pancha Pandavas when he was in Manipur with his wife Hirimba. The place had been ruled by many Kings of different dynasties across Assam, and the most significant ones were the Ahom Dynasty, the Kachari Dynasty and the Moran Dynasty before the impact of the British on Assam. But Doom Dooma was an unseen and underdeveloped region for many decades, mostly covered with forests until the British had noticed the region as an excellent place for the cultivation of tea and cleared the forests and set up tea farms which gave the place a new identity and made it known among people as the 'Tea City'. Now, Doom Dooma, has the largest tea gardens in Asia. Hence it is right to say that Doom Dooma generates a sizable amount of currency for the Indian government from its tea exports. The town is mainly surrounded by tea gardens and the scenic beauty of the place and surroundings easily captivates the mind of a stranger. It is an old town which got its township during Second World War and currently it is under the Tinsukia Circle.

Geography and climate

DoomDooma is located at 27°34′N 95°34′E / 27.57°N 95.57°E / 27.57; 95.57.[1] It has an average elevation of 114 m (374 ft). It is situated on the bank of Doomdooma river, a tributary of River Brahmaputra. The place is humid in nature and receives heavy rainfall throughout the rainy season. In the season of summer, the temperature varies from 25 to 38 Degree Celsius and in winters the temperature remains from 5 to 22 Degree Celsius.

Moreover Doomdooma is itself famous for its beautiful tea gardens. Doomdooma has some of the largest tea gardens in Asia.

DoomDooma has an average literacy rate of 70% where the male literacy is 75% and, female literacy is 63%. The town has many schools and colleges of different mediums, mostly English, Assamese, Bengali and Hindi, which contribute towards the education and literacy of the many. The most popular schools and colleges in the place are- Don Bosco High School, St. Mary's School, Hoonlal High School, Doom Dooma Girls' School, Bongiya Vidyalay, Jawahar Hindi Vidyalay, Learners' High School,Shiksha The Gurukul,Dr. Rajendra Prashad HE School, Kendriya Vidyalaya(ARC), Lotus Academy, Doom Dooma Jatiya Vidyalay, Doomdooma College, Don Bosco Junior College, Hoonlal Higher Secondary School, Learners' Higher Secondary School, Karma Institute (KIICD), St. Xavier's School, etc. Hoonlal High School is the oldest Assamese Medium High School, donated by Golaprai Hoonlall & Co., by its Founder Member Late Hanuman Bux Agarwalla.

Transport

The main source of transportation here is public buses and Tata Magics which makes journey between the town and its district very easy anytime. It also has a small local train running between Tinsukia to Dangari via Doom Dooma, however once in a day and that too on unscheduled timings thereby giving poor service for this part of the country. Autorickshaws and Tata Wingers are a popular means of transportation here. It also has a private airport under A.R.C. Cycle Rickshaws are an easy source of transportation within the local area.

Economy

The economy of the region is mainly dependent upon tea cultivation. There are several major and minor tea companies around the region dealing with tea production through tea estates established throughout the region. Some of the leading companies are Hindustan Unilever Ltd, M.K Shah Exports, Russell Industries Ltd, Jalan Enterprises Pvt Ltd, Warren Tea ltd,Assam Frontier Tea Co Ltd etc. Again, Hindustan Unilever Group's, Personal Product Factory is situated near the area reducing the rate of unemployment in the area. A very important base of Government of India situated in Doom Dooma town which is known as AVIATION RESEARCH CENTRE and basically it is an Air Reconnaissance Centre to keep a vigil on International Border along with China.It is a very important airbase which Government of India point of view and it generated significant economical values for the town.

Culture

People following different religions reside peacefully in Doom Dooma which includes Hindus (50%) Christians (4%) Muslims (40%) Buddhist (1%) and Sikhs (5%) . There are mainly the Assamese who reside in the place but there are also people from various parts of India who have been settled here permanently for years. Language speaking populations comprises Assamese (40%) Tea-garden tribals (28%) Biharis & Marwaris (22%) Bengalis (10%) . Schedule Caste (SC) constitutes 5.19 % while Schedule Tribe (ST) were 0.99 % of total population in Doom Dooma (TC)(census 2011). It has many Namghars (Assamese Prayer Temple), Hindu Gods and Goddesses' Temples, Mosques, Gurudwaras, Churches, Budhha Temples,etc. People visit each other during festivals, irrespective of all caste and religions and celebrate all the major and minor festivals of all the religions mentioned.

Politics

Doom Dooma is part of Lakhimpur (Lok Sabha constituency).[2] Elections are held every four years just like in other parts of Assam and people participate in the elections as candidates or voters. Currently there are two political parties which are active in the region- the Congress and the BJP.
