Douglas Garrett Marshall (born February 3, 1977) is an American professional mixed martial artist currently competing in the Middleweight division of Bellator MMA. A professional competitor since 2003, Marshall has also formerly competed for the WEC, where he was the former Light Heavyweight Champion.

Background

Marshall is from Visalia, California and had a troubled childhood. Marshall's parents divorced when he was 14 years old and he was involved in many street fights growing up. Marshall attended Mount Whitney High School where he played linebacker on the football team and was talented, however he was later expelled for a year because of fighting. Marshall was then put in a continuation school where he could earn the necessary credits to come back to high school, but was expelled again from the continuation school for similar offenses. Eventually Marshall did graduate and earn a high school diploma, and also worked in the construction trade as a flooring contractor to support himself. Marshall began fighting after being challenged by his father to compete in the rising sport. Marshall attended a WEC event and told his father that he could defeat one of the fighters in the cage, and after his father challenged him to this, the 26-year-old Marshall went to a local gym and began training, eventually beating that fighter in his third professional fight.[3]

Mixed martial arts career

World Extreme Cagefighting

Marshall began his career in the WEC at Heavyweight, but dropped down a weight class when Zuffa eliminated that division upon purchasing the organization. He won the WEC Light Heavyweight Championship by defeating Lodune Sincaid and subsequently defended it twice against Justin McElfresh and Ariel Gandulla.

After losing his title to Brian Stann, Marshall left the WEC and began competing for the now-defunct Palace Fighting Championship. Since the PFC has disbanded, Marshall most recently knocked out Keith Berry in the first round of PureCombat's Fearless event on October 17, 2009.

Independent promotions

When TPF Middleweight Champion David Loiseau pulled out of a TPF 10 fight with Giva Santana due to an undisclosed injury requiring surgery, Marshall stepped in to face Santana in a middleweight non-title bout.[4] He lost via technical submission in the first round.

He next competed on India's Super Fight League's third event, SFL 3, against Zelg Galešić.[5] He lost the fight via KO early in the first round from a flying knee and punches.

Bellator MMA

In November 2012, Marshall made his debut for Bellator. He faced Hawaiian fighter Kala Hose at Bellator 82.[6] He won the fight via knockout at just 22 seconds in the first round.

In January 2013, Bellator announced Marshall as a competitor in the Season Eight Middleweight Tournament. His quarterfinal fight took place at Bellator 89 against Andreas Spang. He won the fight via TKO in the first round. Marshall then faced Sultan Aliev in the semifinals at Bellator 92, He won via split decision.

On April 4, 2013, Marshall faced Brett Cooper in the finals of the Season Eight Middleweight Tournament at Bellator 95. He won the fight via knockout in round one.

Having earned his title shot, Marshall faced Alexander Shlemenko on November 22, 2013 at Bellator 109 for the Bellator Middleweight Championship. He lost the fight via KO due to a body shot in the first round. Following the fight, Marshall tested positive for a banned substance and was subsequently fined and banned by the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission until February 7, 2014.[7]
