Dow International Medical College is a government-owned public sector medical college in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, which is recognised by Pakistan medical and dental council to admit 150 students per year. It is affiliated with Dow University of Health Sciences,[1] Karachi. It is the only Medical College in Pakistan which is specifically for Overseas Pakistanis, and is the only public sector medical college in Pakistan having its own liver transplant unit in addition to the state of art other clinical services.

Introduction

The Dow International Medical College (DIMC) was established in 2005. DIMC is a constituent college of Dow University of Health Sciences admitting 150 MBBS students per year, specifically to facilitate the medical education for the children of overseas Pakistanis residing all around the world. DIMC is following semester system as per the directives of PMDC. A spirally integrated modular curriculum has been adopted by Dow University of Health Sciences since 2009. The DIMC is included in WHO directory & IMED-FAIMER. Recently DIMC has established its dental section which has been allowed by PMDC to admit 50 BDS students per year. The college building is a state-of-the-art with a constructed area of 200,000 square feet. The college has five fully equipped laboratories including the Power Lab well established Anatomy and Forensic Museum, exotic Dow Animal House harboring horses, rats and mice of different type strains, rabbits, monkeys and Snakes for research purposes, skill lab for undergraduates & postgraduates and Professional Development Centre for Faculty development & training. The college has a huge three storied library with book section, digital library with three hundred work stations, reading room & video conferencing room.

Teaching Hospitals

DIMC currently having two affiliated teaching hospitals at Ojha Campus, the medical college has magnificently grown its clinical services through Dow University Hospital with a flourished OPD Block with busy clinics of medicine and its allied and surgery and its allied disciplines. Marvellous Diagnostic and Research Facilities of the college has gained a great attention of the Karachi city. These facilities were established by building the Dow Diagnostic Research and Reference Laboratories and Radio Diagnostic Complex. Two institutes, National Institute of Liver & Gastrointestinal Diseases and National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology are not only providing medical education to students but also providing commendable diagnostic and treatment services to patients. Teaching units for Dow International Medical College with in the same Ojha campus are: 1) Dow University General Hospital (600 beds) and ICU (100 beds) 2) Ojha Institute of Chest diseases (250 beds) 3) National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology 4) Dental Section, DIMC 5) National Institute of Liver and Gastrointestinal Diseases with liver transplant unit.

History

It was planned to have DIMC at its Ojha campus by Dow University in 2005 and got the project approved by Higher Education Commission (HEC).[2] Meanwhile in 2006 the college was up and running in an old block after renovation it in accordance with International Standard in all respects. In December 2009 DIMC was be shifted into the newly constructed state of the art complex which covers a total area of 175,000 sq ft (16,300 m2). This spacious building has ten lecture halls each having a capacity of 280 students. In 2011 Dental section was started in the same building which is also approved by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) [3] for admission of 50 students per year for BDS course. Dow University has recently admitted many foreign students in an attempt to increase popularity on the international scale.

Facilities

Beautifully build male and female hostels with comfortable atmosphere and efficient security panel for the students of DIMC are also present within the campus. Extracurricular activities including outdoor and indoor games among the students are facilitated by a large cricket ground & state of the art Gymnasium.[4]

The Dow University is the first institute in Pakistan to prepare and adopt modular system to make better doctors.

International Recognition

The Dow International Medical College has been added in International Medical Education Directory (IMED), while Dow Medical College and Sindh Medical College are already included in the directory.

DIMC is recognised by WHO too.

The IMED provides an accurate and up-to-date source of information about international medical schools, recognized by appropriate Government agencies (usually Ministry of Health) of the countries where the medical schools are located. These schools are then also recognized and listed by International Medical Education Directory (IMED).
