Soma Ghosh

Dr. Soma Ghosh is a leading vocalist of the Benaras Gharana. She is from Uttar Pradesh, India. Government of India conferred on her the fourth highest civilian awarded, Padma Shri recently.[1][2]

Dr. Soma Ghosh is the daughter of freedom fighter, Shri Manmohan Chakravarty and adopted daughter of Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan, with whom she had the opportunity to have Jugalbandi / duet, five times, one of which was at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and once at the Parliament of India where she was facilitated by the President of India, Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, Sonia Gandhi & Jaswant Singh and again in 2010 by the President of India, Pratibha Patil. She is also the first woman to ever perform in the Parliament of India.

A literature graduate from Benaras Hindu University, Soma Ghosh mastered in Music and completed her PhD in Chhota Khayal. Under Smt. Bageshwari Devi she specialized in the genres that typify Benaras singing, namely Thumri, Tappa, Hori, Chaiti, Kajari, Dadra and Ghazal.

She is the founder of the non government organisation, Madhu Murchhana, which was established in 1999.
