Dr. U. Bapputty Haji ( Arabic: الحاج د يو بافوتي Malayalam:ഡോ. യു. ബാപ്പുട്ടി ഹാജി), a village physician by profession, was a think tank of Malabar Muslims and one of the founders of Darul Huda Islamic University, founder leader of Sunni Mahal Federation (SMF).[2]

Early life

Dr. Baputti-Haji was born in 1929 September as the son of Kunjaalan Kutti Vaidyar and Puthukkutti Kunchikkadiumma in Chemmad. His full name was Kunjavaran Kutti and Baputti was his nickname. His father was one of the physicians. He was brought up with Islamic background and was enrolled in Islamic institution. After the establishment of Tirurangadi-orphanage, his father admitted him in the orphanage. Kunjalan Kutti was one of the committee members of the orphanage. Baputti Haji studied the primary education from his own father and completed the Islamic studies under Nilimaavukkal Kunchi Usthad. He was enrolled in Nilimavukkal A.M.L.P-school for primary education and in Tirurangadi A.U.P-school for upper education. He studied at Tirurnagadi Noorul Islam Madrassa and Parappil Madrsathul Muhammadiyya. In his 13th age, he completed Islamic learning from Vilakkandathil Muhyadheen Kutti Haji and MN Kunjutti Musliyar by studying famous Pathu Kithab, Fathul Mueen and Noorul Absar. After successfully completing SSLC, he perused higher studies in medicine and also absorbed basic knowledge in Sanskrit language.

Family life

Dr. Baputty Haji led an exemplary family life by bringing forth Islamic family values with his six children and sixty-one grandchildren. He loved each member, and tried his best to take care of all the work. He supports them to enter the sites of speech or religious occasion. He is also keen on agriculture as well and supported their children do to please him. He forced his children to study modern subjects such as English and mathematics with giving more priority for religious education. Baputti Haji adopted poor children and helped them study with their own value. After his death, his elder son U Shafi Haji took the responsibility of Darul Huda Islamic University.

Social service

He realized the necessity of western education for the renovation of Muslim society in post-independent India and later formulated new education system, in which both of western education and Islamic education are given its due. He shared his thoughts with Maulana Quthubi Muhammed Musliyar, Kottumal Aboobacker Musliyar, Marhoom Kooriyad Thanu Musliyar and Chappanangadi Bappu Musliyar. His theory of mixed education paved the path for the establishment of Darul Huda Islamic University on June 26, 1986. He dreamt the renaissance of Muslim Mahal system and later gave birth for SMF. SMF concentrates largely on Mahal based creative activities as well as Mahal coordination. He performed the duties of Secretary-General of Chemmad Darul Huda Islamic University, State Treasurer of Sunni Mahal Federation, Malappuram- district wing of Samastha, president of Chemmad Qidamathul Islam Madrassa, executive member of Vidybyasa board, president of Majlisu Dawathul Islamiyya and treasurer of Tanur Islhul Arabic college.

Baputti Haji decided to bring reforms in society and saw the necessity of education in realizing renaissance of his society. In his early ages, he was successful in creating many organization to make Islamic awareness in society and one of them is "Islamic Yuva Jana sanagam" (organization of Muslim Youth). He brought Vazakkad Saad Musliyar, renowned personality in locality, to teach the people, especially youth, the Islamic ideologies. His social commitment helped him in creating wide network with scholars from various corner of Kerala and CH Hydrose Musliyar and MM Basheer Musliyar accompanied him in his reformative activities.[3] He gave birth to many organization in order to realize the empowerment of society such Ithihadul Islam Sangam (1961), Jamiyyathul Muhmineen (1975) and Sunni Mahal Federation (1976).

Birth of Sunni Mahal Federation (SMF)

Baputti Haji was the founder of Mahal-organization and he was accompanied by the MM Basheer Musliyar and CH Hydrose Musliyar. In April 1976, Samastha conducted its annual conference at Edaukkula and in its closing section the establishment of Sunni Mahal Federation was officially announced. The organization was tailor made to coordinate the Islamic activities based on Mahal. Edakkara, Kalikavu Mancheri, Malappuram, Kottakkal, Tirurangadi, Kondotti, Arikkode, Tanur, Tirur, Edappal, Ponnani, Kuttipuam and Perinthalmannna were the main centres of SMF.

Establishment of Darul Huda Islamic University

He recognized the urgency in replacing the old Islamic Darse system, which was on verge of decline, with new one that would be integrated form of spiritual and material subject. Baputti Haji, Basheer Musliyar and CH Hydrose Msuliyar decided to include the modern pattern of education with a primitive style of Dars. In 1962, they put this experiment in Kondotty Darse and it becomes enchanting victory. They brought more changes to teaching by including English, Arabic and Urdu. In 1980 under the Sunni Mahal Federation, they provided new education form in Vengara, Kottakkal, Nediurup and Kadalundi. The successful experiment of this new education system paved path to lay stone of Darul Huda Islamic University on 25 December 1983.

Demise

After a long battle with age-related diseases, he died on 22 July 2003 at his own residence. His body was laid to rest at the varsity campus.[4]
