Ann Gervasoni
Dr Ann Gervasoni is an Associate Professor in Education at Monash University.[1] Educated at Genazzano FCJ College, Kew, Christ College (now Australian Catholic University), Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now University of Ballarat) and LaTrobe University Dr Gervasoni is best known for her work in early numeracy [2] including the Let's Count Program for the Smith Family [3] and the EMU (Extending Mathematical Understanding) Program [4]
Early numeracy
Ann was a member of the research team for the Early Numeracy Research Project (1999–2001) in Victoria, and has been a member of the Victorian Board of Studies Mathematics Key Learning Area Committee and the Council of the Mathematics Association of Victoria. Her work in the area has seen the EMU program utilised in New South Wales,[5][6] Victoria,[7] Western Australia,[8] Germany and Brunei.[9]
The Extending Mathematical Understanding (EMU) Program focussed on the early years of schooling which involves intensive 30-minute daily sessions for groups of 3 children over a period of 10–20 weeks. The EMU Program has been shown by detailed research to improve children’s learning and confidence with mathematics.[10]
Community engagement
Dr Gervasoni has assisted with Bachelor of Teaching course at the East Timor: International Contribution at Marist Catholic Teachers Institute, Baucau. This includes visits in 2004 and 2005.[11]
In 2008 Dr Gervasoni was named the ACU Staff winner of the Outstanding Community Engagement Award for her work: to assist financially disadvantaged children to learn mathematics; establishment of maths clubs in partnership with The Smith Family; to build community partnerships for a Clemente Program in Ballarat and to support the growth of Friendship Schools, and community projects in East Timor.[12]
