Driscoll (surname)
Driscoll is one derivation of the Irish Gaelic surname O'Driscoll. The Irish for O'Driscoll is Ó hEidirsceoil. The name originates from County Cork in the province of Munster where the O'Driscoll were, in ancient times, a clan claiming descent from an early High King of Ireland Lugaid mac Con (O'Donovan 1849). The O'Driscoll were the most powerful sept of the Corcu Loígde, the historical descendants of the Dáirine, to whom Lugaid mac Con belonged.
The 'O' prefix was dropped by many in the Ireland of the 17th and 18th century.
