Driving licence in Italy

In Italy the driving licence is a governmental right given to those who request a licence for any of the categories they desire. It is required for every type of motorized vehicle. The minimum age to obtain a driving licence is: 16 years for a motorcycle, 18 years for a car, and 21 years for buses and cargo vehicles .

The so called "patentino" (small driving licence) is an Italian licence given to youngsters with the minimum age of 14 years. This licence permits Italian teenagers to drive in Italy scooters and "micro-cars" (small cars with maximum motor power of 4 kW and maximum speed of 45 km/h). At the minimum age of 16 years, Italians can take the licence for the 125cc which is recognized at European level.

Obtaining a driver's licence

The Italian driving licence can be obtained after finishing a driving school and passing a two-stage test, the theory test and road test. Primary school diploma is also required to obtain valid driver's licence.
