Established in 1965, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry is a private non-profit organization, and the stated purpose of the organization is to support the business community in Dubai and promote Dubai as an international business hub. As of 2014 the Chairman of the Dubai Chamber was Abdul Rahman Saif Al Ghurair. Hamad Buamim is the Chamber’s CEO and President.[1][2]

History

The Dubai Chamber was established by a decree issued by the late Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1965. Dubai Chamber started its activities with 450 members and a 12-member board of directors. The number of members increased to over 150,000, from all economic sectors, in 2013. There are 24 board members.[3]

Memberships

The Chamber created 27 business groups that are divided by industry, and 43 business councils that are divided by country.[4]

Services

Services of the Dubai Chamber include: issuing of Certificates of Origin and ATACarnets; legal services; arbitration and mediation; organizing trade fairs and economic forums; organizing training programs for entrepreneurs; serving business groups and councils; credit rating services; contract drafting; business matching services; providing access to updated research and numerous reports. In 2012, in partnership with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Dubai Chamber launched the first ICC Regional Banking Commission Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a chapter of ICC’s rule-making body for the banking industry.

Later the Chamber launched the International Business Network, to help global businesses set up in Dubai. It is the first organisation of its kind in the Middle East to offer international membership.[8][9]

Local and international Offices

Dubai Chamber has the head office in Deira and another branch in Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority (JAFZA). Representative offices are located in Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZA) and the Land Transport Customs Building in Al Aweer.

The Dubai Chamber opened representative offices in Baku, Azerbaijan and in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As of 2013 twenty more were expected to open in emerging markets. In January 2015, an office was inaugurated in Accra, Ghana to further boost Dubai as a global business destination and to build up trade and economic relations with Ghana and the African continent. Trade missions

To idsions. In 2012 it organized trade missions to the US, Ethiopia, Azerbaijan, Germany and India. In 2013 it organized a trade mission to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.[12][13][14][15]

Awards

The Dubai Chamber launched the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award in 2005. The award recognizes and rewards firms that contribute to the UAE's economic development. It is the highest level of recognition for business excellence that an organization in the UAE can achieve.[16]

Entrepreneurship

In 2013, in cooperation with the private office of Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the Dubai Chamber launched Tejar Dubai, an entrepreneur development programme that aims to help young Emiratis turn their business ideas into realities.[17]

Environment

In 2009 the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry achieved LEED certification for their building based on the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB v2.0). The Chamber became the first existing building in the Middle East and fourth outside North America to achieve the LEED certification for Existing Buildings.[18]

Dubai Chamber’s green building initiatives reduced its water consumption by approximately 77%, and its energy consumption by 47% between 1998 and 2008, leading to accumulated savings of around AED7.1 million. The Dubai Chamber won the CSR Company of the Year award at the inaugural Gulf Business Industry Awards in 2012.[19]

In 2011 the Dubai Chamber launched the CSR Label that recognizes companies that have made a positive impact on the community and demonstrated a commitment to best practices in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).[20]

Events

In 2013 the Dubai Chamber organized and hosted the annual Africa Global Business Forum 2013, where more than 4,500 people came to discuss business opportunities in Africa.[21][22][23]
