Dueling Network (commonly abbreviated as DN) is an online, unofficial Flash-based simulation of Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. It was created by Christopher Salvarani on 3 March 2006 and officially released on 17 May 2011. Since then, its popularity has grown quickly[1] and has since gained more than four million registered users. The site is run by in-game volunteer administrators and moderators. Currently, its server allows for 9100 players to be online at the same time.
Dueling Network started on 8 May 2011 and officially released on 17 May 2011. The site's popularity grew fast since then, and as of 2013, has acquired more than three million registered users. The site provides users with various in-game messaging systems. From the main menu, players can access the Duel Room, construct Decks, check players' rankings and profiles, edit their own profiles and change their account passwords.[2] The game is intended to be a simulation of the real-life card game, and as such, is set to be played manually with little in-game automation and follows official Konami policy as close as possible.
Database and Gameplay
Dueling Network updates its database with all available in Yu-Gi-Oh! as soon as they reach their official release date. All available cards are free-to-play. The game follows all official Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game rules.[3] It is possible to play in Advanced (Rated), Advanced (Unrated), Traditional (Unrated), and Unlimited (Unrated). To play in these sections, players can access the Duel Room and choose the section they want to play in with a Deck that meets the standards of that section.[4][5]
Advanced (Rated)
Advanced (Rated) follows the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game Forbidden/Limited card list. Both TCG and OCG cards are allowed.[6] Players are matched up with each other through a system called the DN Pool that randomly pairs up players who have a similar skill factor. Both players gain or lose rating points based on the outcome of the duel. The Advanced (Rated) section is divided into single duels and matches (winner 2 out of 3).
For rating calculation, Dueling Network uses the following formula:
N = K *(S_A - E_A)
where
K = scaling factor for rating adjustments
S_A = actual result of the game (1 for a win, 0.5 for a draw, 0 for a loss)
E_A = expected result of the game, determined by the relative ratings of the players (close to 1 for almost certain victory, close to 0 for almost certain loss, 0.5 for even match-up)
Rankings
Rankings is the leader board of Dueling Network and it shows singles or matches. It keeps track of rating, wins, and experience points of Dueling Network's users.
Advanced (Unrated)
Advanced (Unrated) follows the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game Forbidden/Limited card list. Players are paired up by hosting matches or singles the Duel Room. A player's rating does not change based on the outcome of unrated singles or matches. A leader board for this section does not exist.
Traditional (Unrated)
Traditional (Unrated) follows the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game's Traditional card list. All of the Forbidden cards are Limited. A leader board for this section does not exist.
Unlimited (Unrated)
Unlimited (Unrated) allows the player to have three of each card in their deck, regardless of the Forbidden/Limited card list. A leader board for this section does not exist.
Administrators
Administrators deal with problems players may find themselves in such as in-game ruling questions, glitches, AFK, spam, cheating, or harassment. There are 3 types of administrators on DN, who can be identified by the color of their usernames in chat boxes: regular (in-game) administrators, whose names are green, senior administrators, whose names are gray, and head administrators, whose names are yellow. They all have duties to moderate Dueling Network's Public chat and to answer calls made by users to solve in-game issues. All administrators have the ability to penalize DN users who break the rules described in the Dueling Network Rules and Punishments Table. Users may become administrators through Dueling Network's Administrator Exam.[7]
Dueling Network Forum
Dueling Network Forum (DNF) is the official forum of Dueling Network. It has sections directly and indirectly associated with the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game and Dueling Network. It contains topics including: Yu-Gi-Oh! card trading, Yu-Gi-Oh! discussions, other TCG Discussions, Yu-Gi-Oh! rulings, DN tournaments, and other topics. Forums are run by volunteer moderators and administrators. DNF has gathered more than one hundred thousand registered members since its launch in 2011.
