Durgasur

Durgasur was a Hindu demon. He was a vicious demon who tried to gain supremacy in Shiva's abode Kailash in his absence but he was killed by Parvati in the form of Goddess Durga.

Story

Once, there was a demon named Durgasur, who underwent severe penances and austerities to please Lord Brahma. After many years, Lord Brahma became pleased with his penances and asked him to demand boons of his choices. Durgasur wanted the boon that no male, demon or God cannot defeat him. He also demanded extraordinary demon powers. Hearing this, Brahma granted his desired boon and evil demonic powers. Empowered and protected by the boons, Durgasur started to form a massive demon army to claim their ruling over heaven and the Earth. Lead by Durgasur, he ousted the Gods, and Indra, their ruler out of heaven and with their help, Durgasur obtained several worlds under his control. Then he tormented and tortured the inhabitants of Earth and he caused many calamities on them and the earth. Desperate for help and shelter, Indra and the other Gods, along with the sages and inhabitants of Earth all went to Kailash to take Lord Shiva's shelter. The Gods, sages and inhabitants of Earth told them everything on account of Durgasur's bad deeds and requested him to protect them. Feeling pity for those in front of him who were in trouble, Lord Shiva turned to his wife, Goddess Parvati and requested to help the Gods and the inhabitants of Earth. Parvati, to serve the cause of her devotees, summoned Kaalratri, a damsel messenger. Parvati ordered Kaalratri (a manifestation of Parvati) to go to Durgasur and tell him to stop his atrocious deeds on common people and Gods and to return the respective worlds of Gods and the heaven to Indra or get killed by Parvati. Kaalratri went to Durgasur and conveyed the message to him. Still, Durgasur refused to stop his bad works and summoned his demons to capture Kaalratri. Kaalratri grew in a massive size and told Durgasur to make arrangements for his death. Saying so, she vanishes. Kaalratri returned to Parvati and conveyed Durgasur's reply to her. Parvati, on hearing this tells her that if Durgasur wants war, it's war he'll get. Saying so, she infuses Kaalratri in her body and leaves for the warfield. Durgasur and his army arrive at the warfield. At that time, Parvati arrives there in a thousand-armed form, holding all weapons of the Gods. A fierce battle was fought between both parties. Then, innumerable Shaktis, her powerful female warrior forms came out from her body all at once and fought with Durgasur's forces. The Shaktis succeed in destroying all of Durgasur's armies and all merge back into Parvati's body. Then a fierce duel broke out between Durgasur and Parvati. In the end, Parvati kills Durgasur with her trident. Seeing the end of demon Durgasur, the Gods, sages and inhabitants of Earth started to glorify Parvati and called her Durga, because of her good deed of killing Durgasur.
