E. Paul Waggoner (1889–1967) was an American rancher and horsebreeder from Texas.
Early life
Edward Paul Waggoner was born in 1889. His father was William Thomas Waggoner, the owner of the Waggoner Ranch.[1][2] His mother was Ella (Halsell) Waggoner.[1] He had a brother, Guy Waggoner and a sister, Electra Waggoner.[1] They grew up at the Waggoner Mansion (a.k.a. 'El Castile') in Decatur as well as on the Waggoner Ranch.[1]
Career
Waggoner inherited one fourth of the Waggoner Ranch, known as the 'Santa Rosa' subsection, where he bred quarter horses.[1][3] In 1945, he purchased Poco Bueno for US$5,700.[1][2] The sire went on to win many halting and cutting competitions.[2] Moreover, he bred him with mares.[2] Some of his offspring, like Poco Lena, Poco Stampede, Poco Mona and Poco Pine, won many equine competitions in the United States.[2] Other national champions bred by Waggoner were Jessie James and Pep Up.[2]
Waggoner was the owner of the rodeo grounds in Vernon.[4] In 1946, he led the first rodeo parade in the town.[4]
Personal life
He was married to Helen Waggoner.[1] They had a daughter, Electra Waggoner Biggs, who became a sculptor.[1]
Death and legacy
Waggoner died in 1967.[2] He was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame posthumously, in 1991.[2]
