1982 would mark the last year Steve Zabriskie called the play by play on regional games. He would return 9 years later to ABC College Football.

1981

Ben Martin, Dennis Franklin and Bob Beattie (the ABC skiing commentator) also were analysts on a few contests that year and ABC continued its tradition of having local sportscasters do play-by-play on several ABC college football games.

ABC had a big shakeup on college football telecasts in 1981 as Jim Lampley was promoted to the college football pregame/halftime and postgame co- hosting duties with Dave Diles.

Chris Schenkel was removed from college football broadcasts altogether that season and relegated to the Pro Bowlers Tour for the last 16 years of his career at ABC with the exception of 2 games in 1988.

Also after 5 seasons or so of essentially alternating the top analyst position, Frank Broyles was named the number one analyst on all but 2 games that season, while Ara Parseghian was demoted to the number 2 team most weeks with Al Michaels but missed the last 3 weeks or so of the regular season due to a kidney ailment.

Darrell Royal and Pepper Rodgers also served as analysts with play by play men from various ABC affiliates filled out the roster on 9 and 10 game weeks as well as Bill Flemming on a few games.

Also Paul Warfield (analyst) and various local ABC affiliate play by play men filled out the 10th spot as did Bill Flemming on a few games.

Chris Schenkel was moved from calling games to co hosting college studio shows with Dave Diles.

As in previous years, local play by play men from ABC affiliates filled the roster on weeks where ABC aired smaller college games or large regional weeks.

1972 marked the debut year of Dave Diles as host of ABC's Prudential College Scoreboard, a job he would hold for 10 seasons; in addition to that, he called the play by play on a few contests that year (mostly 5 or 6 game regional weeks).

Bob Murphy as in previous years handled the play by play for a game or 2 on regional weeks.

Lynn Sanner, Bob Murphy, and Larry Birletti served as play by play men for some games on large regional weeks, Johnny Lujack, Lee Grosscup, Jackie Jensen and Rosey Grier worked a few games as analysts.
