East Delhi (aka Trans Yamuna) is an administrative district of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India. It is bounded by the Yamuna River on the west, North East Delhi to the north, Ghaziabad District of Uttar Pradesh state to the east, and Gautam Buddha Nagar District of Uttar Pradesh to the south.

East Delhi has a population of 1,448,770 (2001 census) and an area of 64 km², with a population density of 22,638 persons per km².

Administratively, the district is divided into three subdivisions: Gandhi Nagar, Preet Vihar, and Shahdara

Demographics

According to the 2011 census East Delhi has a population of 1,707,725,[1] roughly equal to the nation of The Gambia[2] or the US state of Nebraska.[3] This gives it a ranking of 284th in India (out of a total of 640).[1] The district has a population density of 26,683 inhabitants per square kilometre (69,110/sq mi) .[1] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 16.68%.[1] East Delhi has a sex ratio of 883 females for every 1000 males,[1] and a literacy rate of 88.75%.[1]
