The East Germany national athletics team represented East Germany at the international athletics competitions such as Olympic Games or World Athletics Championships, between 1955 and 1973.[1]

History

After the defeat in World War II, Germany was invited to various events, for the first time the Olympic Games in Helsinki 1952 and for the next three editions competed with one team, while already Bern 1954, even before the construction of the Berlin Wall (1961-1989) at the European Championships competed two separate teams (East Germany and West Germany), and this continued even from the Games in Mexico City 1968, until 1990 (for last time the European Championships in Split 1990).

East Germany has 5 participations in the Summer Olympic of 27 editions held from 1896 to 2012.[2]
