Eastern Technical High School (ETHS) is a 1997, 2009, and 2010 Maryland Blue Ribbon High School, a 2010 National Blue Ribbon High School, and a 1999 USDE New American High School located in Essex, Baltimore County, Maryland. Along with their regular classes, students enrolled at this magnet school participate in a career major of their choosing. Academic areas include Allied Health, Automotive Technology, Business Management and Finance, Construction Management, Culinary Arts, Engineering Careers, Information Technology, Law Related Careers, Interactive Media Production and the Teacher Academy of Maryland. The school features a variety of sports teams for both girls and boys. In addition, the school offers various clubs like the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, a concert band, yearly drama productions by the Theater Club, and other such organizations.

Eastern Technical High School used to be known as Eastern Vocational Technical High School (EVT, Eastern Voc-Tech), but due to lack of participation in the vocational program and an increased demand for technology education, the vocational program was removed and the school was renamed in 1994. Unlike the other high schools in the area, Eastern Tech is not districted – it is not a "home" high school for any students regardless of location. All students must apply, take an entrance exam, and meet certain standards for acceptance to the school.

Academic performance

Students at the school consistently perform at high academic levels.

On June 19, 2011, Newsweek Magazine ranks Eastern Tech as the #736 school in the nation, tops in Baltimore County.[1]

Athletics

Eastern Technical High School is known for the success of several of its sports teams.

In 2005 the Varsity Baseball Team won the school's first ever State Championship and just a few months later the Girls Varsity Soccer Team Won the second. [1]

Eastern Tech lacks a 400-meter track as well as the number of fields that many high schools have and, as a result, many teams practice on other campuses around the Essex area, such as the neighboring Kenwood High School or CCBC Essex. The school's mascot is the Maverick. The school colors are orange and black.

Though Eastern Tech has no home track, they have still produced state champions in a number of track events.

Career majors

Although no longer a vocational school, all students attending the school have a career major class during their sophomore, junior, and senior years. The majors offered at Eastern are: Allied Health, Automotive Technology, Business Management and Finance, Interactive Media Production, Construction Management, Culinary, Engineering, Information Technology, Law Related Careers, and Teacher Academy of Maryland. In previous years, some programs such as the Engineering major required students to begin career major classes in their freshman year. However that practice has recently been abandoned to give all students a chance to experience the "swing". This course allows students to spend a few weeks at a time in classes pertaining to various fields and occupations in order for students to get a feel for all the career majors offered at the school. All 9th graders have to go through this swing class in order to receive their Technology Credit as required by the state. As of now, Eastern Technical High School remains a Blue Ribbon School.

Leadership

Raymond G. Pluemer served as the first principal for Eastern Voc-Tech High School, which first opened its doors in 1970; a role he served in until his retirement in 1991. Robert J. Kemmery served as the school's second principal from 1991-2002. Patrick McCusker, who was key to shaping the school into one worthy of a Blue Ribbon, was the school's third principal from 2002-2007. The principal since 2007 was Thomas G. Evans, who retired on July 1, 2015. Christene M. Anderson took his place in 2015.
