The portal was started in 2002 as the Virtual Library for Economics and Business Studies. EconBiz was initially funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and is developed continually with the support of cooperation partners.

Aim

The portal aims to support research in and teaching of economics with a central entry point for all kinds of subject-specific information and direct access to full texts.

Services

EconBiz offers a number of services:

Background

EconBiz was jointly developed by the German National Library of Economics – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics (ZBW) and the University and City Library of Cologne (USB Cologne) as a DFG-funded project. The portal first went online in September 2002.

For the relaunch in October 2010, the metasearch was replaced by a search engine index (Lucene/SOLR). In addition, the Thesaurus for Economics was integrated in order to enable automatic searches for synonyms and translations. By integrating other web services, such as the Electronic Journals Library or the Journals Database, it is possible to check if and where an item is available.

Between October 2010 and January 2011, an ideas competition offered users of EconBiz the opportunity to contribute their own ideas for future EconBiz functions.
