Edgar County Airport (ICAO: KPRG, FAA LID: PRG) is a public-use airport in Edgar County, Illinois, United States. It is located five nautical miles (5.8 mi, 9.3 km) north of the central business district of Paris, Illinois.[1] The airport is included in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a general aviation facility.[2]
Although many U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, this facility is assigned PRG by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA[3] (which assigned PRG to Ruzyne International Airport in Praha, Czech Republic[4]).
Facilities and aircraft
Edgar County Airport covers an area of 180 acres (73 ha) at an elevation of 654 feet (199 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 9/27 with an asphalt surface measuring 4,502 by 75 feet (1,372 x 23 m).[1] A second, intersecting runway, designated 18/36, was completed in late 2012.
For the 12-month period ending August 31, 2010, the airport had 7,000 aircraft operations, an average of 19 per day: 98% general aviation and 2% air taxi. At that time there were 22 aircraft based at this airport: 73% single-engine, 23% multi-engine and 4% ultralight.[1]
The Airport Board nor the County Board knows by what authority and under which Illinois Statute this airport is operating.
Incidents and Controversy
On August 27, 2013 pilot Rusty Bogue was involved in a fatal crash during take off from the Edgar County Airport. Bogue was flying a Cessna 21, dual-engine six seat aircraft. Bogue's aircraft experienced apparent engine trouble and struck a tree a mile from the end of the runway.[5]
Bogue had been involved in several controversies with the Edgar County Airport Board, chaired by James Wells. There are numerous allegations of fraud, illegal contracts and other abuses of power including accusations involving the propriety of a concrete contract to extend the runway. This contract was placed with the concrete company owned by a now former chair of the airport advisory board.[6]
On November 19, 2013 two aircraft, owned by the same owner as the Cessna 421 in which Bogue was killed, were damaged by incendiary devices placed on them. The planes had been spray painted with a threatening message to Bogue's father Rob.[7]
