Edgar Peña Parra (born 6 March 1960) is a Venezuelan Roman Catholic archbishop. Since his appointment by Pope Francis on Saturday, February 21, 2015, he is the Apostolic Nuncio to Mozambique, having formerly served as Apostolic Nuncio to Pakistan.[1]

Edgar Parra received his religious training at the seminary in Maracaibo and was ordained as a Catholic priest in Maracaibo, Venezuela on 23 August 1985. He was nominated priest by the archbishop Domingo Roa Pérez.

Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy

In 1986 Peña Parra was sent to Rome, to attend the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, also known as Scuola dei Nobili, where he got the degree in Canon law, with the thesis: Los Derechos Humanos en el Sistema Interamericano a la luz del Magisterio Pontificio, that was published by the Vatican and that currently is taken as source for the study and analysis by all those who want to deepen several aspects of Human Rights in the whole World.

After getting his degree in Canon Law (and learning Italian, English, French and Russian languages), Peña Parra was enrolled in the diplomatic mission of the Holy See the 1 April 1993.[2]

Archbishop and Apostolic Nuncio

On 8 January 2011 his Excellency Peña Parra was appointed archbishop of Thélepte (a town rich in archeological ruins in Tunisia, which historically was an important center for Christianity in Northern Africa, and now is a symbolic seat for the conversion of those countries) by Pope Benedict XVI with the title of bishop.

After this he was appointed to the Apostolic Nunciature to Pakistan.

On 2 February 2011 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as apostolic nuncio to Pakistan, as successor of Adolfo Tito Yllana, who was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mons. Peña Parra received the consecration on 5 February 2011 by the laying on of hands from Pope Benedict XVI, with co-consecrant cardinals Angelo Sodano and Tarcisio Bertone.

On 21 February 2015 he was appointed by Pope Francis as Apostolic Nuncio of Mozambique.[3]
