Edmund Janniger (born 30 December 1995) is a Polish politician^[1][2] who briefly served as Advisor to the Minister of National Defence in 2015.^[3] He holds the record for being the youngest ministerial advisor in Poland’s history.^[4][5]

Biography

Edmund Janniger was born on 30 December 1995, the child of university professors Robert A. Schwartz and Camila Krysicka. Janniger conducted medical research, coauthoring six scholarly publications,^[6] and worked for several international nongovernmental organizations. He initially wanted to become a physician, but later decided to engage in politics.^[5] He entered Rutgers University, and is currently a student at the Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration.^[2]

Janniger is the President of the Rutgers Council on Public and International Affairs.^{[nb 1]} Janniger is in his second term as a Rutgers University Senator, and was elected and subsequently reelected by the full Senate to its Executive Committee.^[8]

He is considered one of the closest associates of Antoni Macierewicz; they have been collaborating closely for three years.^[9][10] Janniger worked as legislative assistant to Macierewicz. In 2015, he was appointed as Macierewicz’s Deputy Chief of Staff.^[11] During the 2015 Polish parliamentary election, Janniger served as the Deputy Campaign Manager for Law and Justice in the 10th Electoral District.^[12][13] Janniger has published on military intelligence in Politico.^[14]

On November 16, 2015, Janniger was appointed as Advisor to the Minister of National Defence, Antoni Macierewicz.^[15] He was a Member of the Political Cabinet of the Ministry of National Defence till December 8.^[16] Janniger was selected as the President of the Institute of Global Affairs, a New York City-based membership organization and think tank, on December 11.^[17][18]

The leadership of Law and Justice applauded the appointment; most leaders of opposition parties declared their support, with some members expressing ironic criticism.

Civic Platform Leader and former Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz said that "[Janniger] may be a capable young man."^[19] General Stanisław Koziej, former Head of the National Security Bureau, strongly praised Janniger’s selection.^[20] Appearing on a TVN24 television show hosted by Andrzej Morozowski, sociology professor Jadwiga Staniszkis insisted that Janniger was “a great acquisition” for the Ministry of National Defence.^[21] Journalist Jarosław Makowski, the longtime head of Civic Platform's think tank, wrote of the appointment:^[22]

Some criticized Janniger for his lack of experience. Janniger’s appointment was debated on TVP Info by outgoing Senate Defence Committee Chairman Wojciech Skurkiewicz, of Law and Justice, and Member of the Sejm Tomasz Lenz, of Civic Platform. Skurkiewicz pointed to the extensive collaboration between Janniger and Macierewicz; Lenz found fault with the government for the appointment.^[23] Speaking with Superstacja, Stefan Niesiołowski castigated Macierewicz for selecting Janniger.^[24] For remarks made about Janniger, Super Express listed Niesiołowski as one of the five politicians who "deserve the rod" in 2015.^[25]
