Education in Teluk Intan

Being one of the principal towns in the Lower Perak district, Teluk Intan has over 100 primary schools [1] and more than 20 secondary schools.[2] Schools in established prior to the Independence of Malaya in 1957 include:

Established as the Government Tamil School, the school was handed over to the Methodist Church in 1901 and renamed the Anglo-Tamil School. The school was renamed again as the Anglo-Chinese School in 1904. The current name was adopted in 1963.[3]
Established as the St. Agnes School, the administration of the school was handed over to the Sisters of the Holy Infant Jesus in 1926 and was renamed as the Convent School.[4]
Established with the merger of the Wah Keow Primary School, Phooi Yong Primary School and the Anson Girl's School, the school was divided into two separate institutions in 1962 when the Education Act 1961 was passed by the Parliament [5]
Grant-in-aid school using the Malay language as the language of instruction
Chinese Independent High School using the Chinese language as the language of instruction
Established as a parish school adjoining the Roman Catholic St. Anthony's Church, the administration of the school was taken over by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools or the Lasallian Brothers in 1947 as part of the school's rebuilding in the post Japanese occupation period.[6]
One of the first Malay language secondary schools in Malaysia.[7]

There is one boarding school in Teluk Intan that is Sekolah Menengah Sains Teluk Intan and one technical school, Sekolah Menengah Teknik Teluk Intan.

There are 2 public university branch campuses located in Teluk Intan. The campuses are UiTM Teluk Intan Campus of Faculty of Medicine completed in October 2010 and UKM Teluk Intan Campus of Faculty of Medicine (currently under construction) . Both are located beside Hospital Teluk Intan.

There are currently no collegiate level institutions of higher education in Teluk Intan but further education is currently provided by the Teluk Intan Community College (established 2001) and the Teluk Intan District Hospital is used as a teaching hospital by the Universiti Kuala Lumpur Royal College of Medicine Perak.[8]
