History
Since 2006, EirGrid has operated and developed the national high voltage electricity grid in Ireland. EirGrid is a state-owned company, and pays a dividend to the national income of Ireland each year. EirGrid is independent from ESB. We operate the flow of power on the grid and plan for its future, while ESB networks is responsible for carrying out maintenance, repairs and construction on the grid. The grid moves wholesale power around the country. We bring energy from generation stations to heavy industry and high-tech users. We also supply the distribution network operated by ESB Networks that powers every electricity customer in the country.
Role
EirGrid's task is to deliver a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity – now, and in the future. The high-voltage network brings power from generators, and supplies wholesale energy to heavy users. The grid also supplies the electricity distribution network. This powers every home, business, school, hospital, factory and farm on the island. EirGrid forecast when and where electricity is needed across the island of Ireland: hour-to-hour, day-to-day, and year-to-year. EirGrid work to ensure there is enough electricity for industry to prosper, and for employment to grow. Efficient management and development of the grid is seen as a key factor in facilitating inward investment by bodies like the IDA, Ireland's inward investment promotion agency, and the development body Forfas.
EirGrid has its own board with 11 board members and is regulated by the Commission for Energy Regulation (the CER) and its shares are held by the Irish Government. Under the Single Electricity Market, EirGrid operates the wholesale power market on the island of Ireland with System Operator of Northern Ireland (SONI) under the EirGrid Group which also includes the Single Electricity Market Operator (SEMO).
More information on EirGrid and the EirGrid Group can be found on the EirGrid website.
