Elena Arellano Chamorro

Elena Arellano Chamorro (1836-1911), was a Nicaraguan reform pedagogue and religious lay nun. She is regarded as a pioneer for education of women in Nicaragua.

Chamorro early devoted herself to religion and charity. In 1872, she Casa de Huérfanas de Artes y Oficios in her home to provide women without means with an education to make it possible for them to support themselves without resorting to prostitution. This was the first college open to women in Nicaragua. In 1891, she founded the Colegio La Inmaculada.
