Elie Hirschfeld (born December 25, 1949)[1] is an American real estate developer, theatrical producer, philanthropist and art collector based in New York City. He is the son of the late real estate mogul Abe Hirschfeld.

Real Estate

Elie Hirschfeld started his career as a real estate attorney at Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy. The son of New York real estate mogul Abe Hirschfeld, Hirschfeld has developed properties such as the Grand Sutton, the Hotel Pennsylvania,[2] the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Park Avenue Court, Sports Club LA Building, Manhattan Mall at Herald Square now with JC Penney, the Gotham and Exchange Tower. He owns more than 1,000 apartments and in excess of 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2) of commercial space in the NYC metropolitan area. One of Hirschfeld's properties is the once-owned summer residence of Bill and Hillary Clinton, which is worth an estimated $32.5 Million.[3]

Philanthropy and arts

Hirschfeld created the Hirschfeld Foundation in support of education, healthcare, athletics and Jewish causes. He serves as trustee emeritus of Brown University and Long Island University, director of the United States board of the Weizmann Institute of Science, and trustee of numerous New York City hospitals. He has served on the board of directors and steering committees of several organizations, including the Jewish National Fund.

Hirschfeld's art collection includes Andy Warhol's "Brooklyn Bridge" and Karel Appel's "Untitled", as well as "Gingko Trees in Central Park" (2002–2004, Oil on Canvas) by Francoise Gilot.[4]

Hirschfeld is also Tony Award voting member of The Broadway League and has produced and co-produced Broadway shows including the David Mamet play, Oleanna.[5]

Controversy

Hirschfeld's ownership of certain properties has been questioned by his sister (Rachel). She has claimed that Elie forged their father Abe's signature on ownership papers for hundreds of millions' worth of deeds, an argument which Elie's lawyer said a court had previously rejected.[6] In addition, Danny Esquilin who claimed to be an assistant to Abe, released pictures to the media claiming that Elie abused Abe in the year before his death, which Elie has called "baseless" and "a play" by his sister.[7] Elie has also been accused of pushing Abe down the stairs in a sworn statement from Simon Rosen, which Elie says is untrue. Elie says there is no evidence that Rosen ever worked for his father.[8]

Personal

Hirschfeld studied at the London School of Economics and then graduated from New York University Law School in 1974. He is a 1971 graduate of Brown University and a trustee emeritus.[9]

Hirschfeld has completed over 100 triathlons, marathons and other endurance events [10] including the 2012 New York City Ironman Triathlon at age 62.[11] He reached the best level so far on the international stage when he placed fourth in his age group at the prestigious and highly competitive AJ Bell London Triathlon.[12]

In February 2009, Hirschfeld was sued by his former wife Susan, who claimed he owed her more than $520,000 in support. She stated in an affidavit that before she filed for divorce in April 2008, he once feigned illness to return from a vacation ahead of the family, and then removed items belonging to her and their three children from their apartment.[13]

In 2011 Hirschfeld married Sarah J. Schlesinger, a physician and associate professor of clinical investigation at Rockefeller University.
