Elmax steel

Elmax is a powder metallurgy stainless steel created by Bohler-Uddenholm. It is corrosive resistant due to its high Chromium percentage. It also has excellent edge holding capabilities. Elmax has 1.70% Carbon, 18% Chromium compared to the popular S30v which has 14% Chromium. Elmax also has .30% Manganese, 1.00% Molybdenum, .80% Silicon and 3.00% Vanadium. These combined with the proper heat treat make for a terrific steel. It is a fairly easy steel to sharpen and it becomes razor sharp due to the powder metallurgy process and the limited impurities. Elmax is not only used for knives but it is used for machines that are constantly running because the steel is so tough.

Comparable steels

Other comparable steels are CPM S30V, CPM S35vn, CTS-XHP, M390.

Elmax Heat Treat

Elmax heat treat is run between 55 and 62.5 RC. This gives the knife great toughness, so it does not chip easily while at the same time holds an outstanding edge.
