Embalmer (band)
Embalmer is an American death metal band from Cleveland, Ohio. Formed in 1990 after changing their name from Corpsegrinder, and active to this day.
Formation and Early Releases (1989-1992)
In 1989, Toby Wulff (Bass/Vocals), Roy Stewart (Drums), and Mark Davis (Guitar) formed the band, originally called Corpsegrinder. They released their first demo, "Into The Oven" independently in 1991, by that time under the name Embalmer.During this time "Into The Oven" was noticed by the underground worldwide, and they began to distribute the demo through tape trade. After this release, the band underwent many a couple line-up changes. At the end of the recording of Into the Oven Scott Cunningham (Guitar) stepped in to play 2nd guitar but was quickly replaced with Duane Morris (Guitar). But late 1992 saw the departure of Toby Wulff and Duane Morris.
Rotting Remains to Hiatus (1993-1997)
In 1993 they independently released the demo "Rotting Remains", with Roy and Mark of the original group, and Rick Fleming (Vocals), Brian Holmberg (Bass), and Jocko Jermann (Guitar) joining them. In 1994 the demo caught the attention of Relapse Records and they began distributing it through their catalog worldwide. Late 1994 Brian Holmberg left the band, to be replaced by first the short Return of Toby Wulff, and then Dave Phillips (Bass), and in 1995 released the EP "There Was Blood Everywhere" on 7" vinyl under Relapse Records, containing four tracks. Two years later they released a compilation album under the same name, which re-released "Rotting Remains" and "There Was Blood Everywhere" on one album. Dave Phillips left and was replaced by Greg Jucuum (Bass) in early 1996 and then in late 1997 Rick Fleming left and was briefly replaced by Frank Walls (Vocals) Shortly following, they went on hiatus, and would not return for eight years.
Reformation and Rushed New Album (2005-2007)
After a very long break which many (including the band) thought was the end of Embalmer, the band got back together in 2005 and immediately began work on new material. The band at this point consisted of Roy, Rick, Mark, Jocko and newcomer Rob Lesniak. The band was voted one of the top ten Gore metal albums for There Was Blood Everywhere. In early 2006,both Mark and Jocko left the band, leading to Don Wolff (Lead Guitar) joining the band, and eventually the return disappointing return of Duane Morris. In 2007 they played several shows alongside fairly notable bands of their genre.[1] Soon they were in the studio, recording 13 Faces Of Death, which would be released on Friday, October 13, 2006, under the label Potatohead Productions. It would be their first full-length album. Critics said 13 Faces Of Death is "guaranteed to peel back your face".[2] Unfortunately the album fell far short of expectations and set the band back severely.
Tours, Momentum and a New Era (2013-present)[3]
In 2013 the band parted ways with vocalist Rick Fleming, who subsequently robbed the band of the remainder of the band fund before going into hiding. Brian Baxter recruited longtime friend Paul Gorefiend to fill the vocal shoes, and a young bass talent in Joe Wunderle joined the ranks as well. With this lineup the band forged ahead and played all committed shows booked before they joined. In addition this lineup departed on the band's first tours of the United States. The first was the "Embalmination Tour 2013" which saw the band head West/South for a 3 week period playing a series of dates capped between Las Vegas Deathfest and Foothills Gutfest along with Forged in Gore. Other tours followed including the "Texecution Mini-Tour 2014" with Embalmed (TX), Flesh Hoarder + Interment (TX), and the "Dead in Winter" tour 2014 alongside Goemagot.
The band continues active to this day, with a brand new album "Emanations from the Crypt" slated for an April 1st 2016 release date through Hells Headbangers records.
