Emerald Airport (IATA: EMD[4], ICAO: YEML) is an airport serving Emerald,[2] a town located in the Central Highlands district of Queensland, Australia. It is located 6 km (4 mi) south of the Emerald town centre, on Springsure Road.[1][5] The airport is operated by the Central Highlands Regional Council.[2]

Emerald Airport is currently serviced by QantasLink, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines and Alliance Airlines who operate a combined (on average) 54 return commercial services to Brisbane per week.

Facilities

The airport resides at an elevation of 624 ft (190 m) above sea level. It has two runways: 06/24 with an asphalt surface measuring 1,900 m × 30 m (6,234 ft × 98 ft) and 15/33 with a gravel surface measuring 926 m × 18 m (3,038 ft × 59 ft).[2]

Emerald Airport recently spent $7.7 million extending the terminal and refurbishing the old terminal. This was complete in the last quarter of 2010.[6] This refurbishment, included security upgrades, improved amenities for passengers and a new flight status information system with displays throughout the airport and online.[7]

In November 2014, work was completed on a $7.58 million upgrade to the Aircraft parking bays at the airport.[8]

Qantaslink

As of November 2015, QantasLink service Emerald Airport with Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. Qantaslink offers six return flights per day to Brisbane, with the exception of Wednesday & Thursday (five), Saturday (two) and Sunday (three).[9] Due to the increase in demand during the Mining Boom, QantasLink engaged Alliance Airlines to operate their higher capacity Fokker 100 aircraft to service high demand flight times.[10] This arrangement ceased in 2014.

Virgin Australia

On 4 October 2011, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines announced that, from 16 January 2012, twice-daily 68-seat ATR-72 services would be operating on weekdays between Emerald and Brisbane.[11] As of November 2015, Virgin offers three return services a day to Brisbane, except for Wednesday (two) and Saturday (one).[12]

Alliance Airlines

It was announced on 31 March 2015 that Alliance Airlines would be making additional capacity on their charter services available to the public for the first time into Emerald, commencing on 13 April 2015.[13] This has added a Monday morning return service and an afternoon/evening return service on both Thursday and Friday to Emerald.[14]

Emerald Airport was ranked 29th in Australia for the number of revenue passengers served in calendar year 2014.[3]
