Emma Louise Blackery[1] (born 11 November 1991)[2] is a British singer-songwriter and YouTube vlogger from Basildon, Essex.[2] Her main YouTube channel has just under 1,180,000 subscribers and over 108 million video views.[3]

Early life and education

Emma Louise Blackery was born in Basildon, Essex. She is the only child of her parents, Sheila and Michael Blackery, who separated when she was thirteen. Throughout childhood and her teenage years, Emma was raised predominantly by her father. After her parents separated, Blackery's mother went on to have another two children, Febe and Travis.[4] Blackery grew up listening to Michael Jackson and Madonna[4] and taught herself to play guitar at the age of twelve years old after discovering music by Busted, McFly and Green Day.[5] She would later cite Good Charlotte, blink-182, The White Stripes, Placebo and Twenty One Pilots as inspirations for her own music.[6]

Blackery attended The Bromfords School[7][8] and SEEVIC College.

Music

Emma Blackery's first EP, Human Behaviour, was released in early 2012.[9] Blackery initially created her YouTube channel, emmablackery, to promote her music. In July 2013, Blackery released her second EP, Distance, accompanied by a music video for the lead track, "Go The Distance". The music video was uploaded to her main YouTube channel and currently has more than 1,000,000 views.[10] The EP reached No. 1 on the iTunes Rock chart within the first week of its release.[11][12] Blackery released her third EP, Perfect, on 11 November 2014, her 23rd birthday,[13] and the song "Perfect" entered the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart at number 8.[14]

In October 2015, Blackery announced that she was in the process of writing and recording her fourth EP.[15] She later revealed the EP would be entitled "Sucks To Be You", due for release in May 2016.[16]

On 4 April 2016, Blackery announced that she would be joining pop punk band Busted as a special guest on their Pigs Can Fly Tour 2016.[17] On April 9, 2016, Blackery released a teaser on her website of her upcoming single, "Sucks to Be You".[18]

Emma Blackery's first YouTube channel was called 'emmaforthewin'.[19]

Emma Blackery created her main channel, 'emmablackery',[20] in May 2012. She began to gain a following from reading excerpts from Fifty Shades of Grey on her channel, but these videos were later removed due to copyright complaints.[21] During her Fifty Shades of Grey series, Blackery also began uploading comedy vlogs, inspired by Shane Dawson and Dan Howell.[22] Her most viewed video on her channel to date is "My Thoughts on Google+" with over three million views.[23][24]

She currently has two active YouTube channels; a main channel,[25] and a gaming channel, BirdyBoots.[26] Her previous lifestyle channel, Boxes of Foxes, was discontinued in April 2016. [27]

Personal life

Blackery lives a vegan lifestyle and supports various charities. In 2014, Blackery started a charity fundraiser for multiple charities, shaving her head after raising a total of £26,101.[28] In December 2015, Blackery successfully campaigned for Liberty In North Korea to receive $25,000 in funding from the annual Project For Awesome.[29]

Blackery has also been vocal about the topic of bisexual erasure.[30]
