Emma Eliza Regan is an award-winning actress,[1] known for her performances on the Abbey stage and in Irish Cinema as well as work in contemporary art and a columnist for various publications.



She trained as a ballet dancer in her teens, getting distinction with the Royal Academy of Dance examinations, but she first came to notice for her acting in 2010 with her impressive professional début with The Abbey Theatre Dublin, Ireland's National Theatre, followed by a Critics Circle award as a lead actress in Ivan Kavanagh's film The Fading Light which won Jameson International Film Festival 'Best Irish Film'.

Education

Regan was educated in Kylemore Abbey and Salerno Secondary School, where she received an exceptional nine honours in her leaving certificate. She trained as a classical ballet and contemporary dancer for a year with Alan Foley, Artistic Director of Cork City Ballet, at Firkin Crane in Cork from the age of 17. She then went on to train in London at London Theatre School before she toured internationally to Cape Town, Boston, Luxembourg and China with Arcana. She is a member of The Actors Studio, Factory, Dublin, a renowned dynamic creative hub where industry leaders mentor future industry leaders working alongside Lance Daly, Shimmy Marcus, John Carney and Jim Sheridan.

Film and television career

Regan made her impressive film acting début aged seventeen in the award winning Ivan Kavanagh horror Tin Can Man opposite Michael Parle which went on to win several international awards prior to its worldwide release.[2]

She made her stage debut at The Abbey Theatre[3] as Mollser in a Wayne Jordon production of The Plough and The Stars.

She is became known for her role of Fiona on RTÉ drama Aisling's Diary.

Brave and precocious performances in independent films followed including Our Wonderful Home,[4] The Fading Light[5] (winner of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival), Tin Can Man (awarded as Boundary Breaking Best Feature at the Sydney Underground Film Festival and Melbourne Underground Film Festival).

Recent work includes the leading role in fantasy film The Shadows, based on a George MacDonald dark fairytale and directed by Colin Downey,.[6]

She played schoolgirl Cathy in Love Eternal, directed by Brendan Muldowney which has been adapted from the Japanese novel Loving The Dead by prolific horror author Kei Oishi (The Grudge). Love Eternal won the Fresh Blood Award at the inaugural Black Bear Film Festival in Warsaw. The film premiered earlier in 2013 at the Galway Film Fleadh and has screened at over at over fifty festivals and markets worldwide, including Sitges and Busan, one of the largest film festivals in Asia. Love Eternal was produced by Conor Barry, Morgan Bushe and Macdara Kelleher for Fastnet Films, with Luxembourg co-producers Red Lion, Dutch co-producers Rinkel Film and TO Entertainment from Japan, with support from the Irish Film Board, the Film Fund Luxembourg and the Netherlands Film Fund. French company Reel Suspects are handling world sales for Love Eternal. It is on European release in 2014.

Journalism

She is a cultural columnist for several publications and outlets, including RTE, Ooh La La, and TNT24.IE. She wrote daily columns on her experiences at the Cannes Film Festival and her time in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, discussing Roman Polanski, Jim Jarmusch and Jane Campion's latest films, giving personal opinions and anecdotes from high society events in Bailoi Beach, the Continental Hotel, at Gotha Club and various galas on Promenade de la Croisette.

She was cover girl on both glossy publication Galway Now and INK magazine in July 2013. She has been featured in The Sunday Independent, and has been a guest on Victoria Mary Clarke's radio show, Galway Bay FM, LMFM, and RTE Radio One.

Contemporary Art

She collaborated with Sara Hibbert on three pieces -Abonnés Series of stills, Flowers Of The Gutter a four-screen video installation and Dancer Somnambulism . These projects have been exhibited in One Marylebone Place in 2010 for Intel's and Jotta Remastered Exhibition, London Design Festival, Orientations: Hoxton Art Gallery, London, CUBE Gallery, Cork Street Gallery in Mayfair, London.

Personal

Regan was born in Connemara, in Galway, and is the younger sister of award winning journalist Mary Regan, the Political Editor at the Irish Examiner newspaper and the sister in law of RTE sports journalist and news reporter Paul O'Flynn.

She has been listed in Hot Press magazine 'Best of Ireland' publication, as well as featuring on both Film Ireland's 'Sexiest Irish Actors', IMDB's 'Most Beautiful Irish Women' and has appeared on the cover of INK magazine and Galway Now.
