Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (Brazil Communication Company), aka EBC, is a Brazilian government-owned corporation, created in 2007 to manage the government's radio and television stations. EBC owns broadcast networks such as TV Brasil, TV Brasil Internacional, and the Nacional and MEC radios. Also owns the Agência Brasil and the Radioagência Nacional.

History

EBC was created by the Brazilian government on 25 October 2007, when was published on Diário da União, by the decree No. 6.246 of October 24, 2007.[1] The creation of the company was authorized on 10 October 2007, by measuring No. 398, converted in the law No. 11.652 of April 7, 2008.[2][3] Its social status was approved on December 10, 2008, by the decree No. 6.689.[4]

The company started with the union of the patrimony and people from the Empresa Brasileira de Comunicação (Radiobrás), and public properties owned by the Associação de Comunicação Educativa Roquette Pinto (ACERP), who had coordinated the TVE Brasil. With the creation of EBC, a new management contract between the federal government, by instrumentation of EBC and ACERP, was made and it passed to be a service provider of EBC, when Radiobrás inherit the channels owned by ACERP.[5]

EBC is conveyed to the Brazilian Republic Presidency's Secretary of Social Communication, and has the journalist Nelson Breve as the director-president. The EBC's headquarters is located in Brasília, but EBC has production centers and other regional offices in Brazil.[5] EBC have autonomy and independence in relation to the federal government to define the programming and distribution of contents in the public broadcast service, and has the finality to offer an public broadcast service with the objectivity to promote the citizenship. The EBC programming is broadcast in radio and television networks, with themes in the education, art, culture, science and technology areas and the production of regional contents, national and independents.[5]

EBC is an anonymous society closed capital company, represented by shares. The Brazilian Government have 100% their shares. Also, can to be an EBC shareholder entities linked to the indirect federal administration, to the states and municipalities, with a limit of 49% of the total capital. The EBC financing comes from the Union General Budget, beyond of funds obtained by the sell of programs, trademark licensing, donations, institutional ads, partnership and programs and the services to public and private companies.
