The Energy Institute, commonly referred to as EI, is the professional body for the energy industry, delivering good practice and professionalism across the depth and breadth of the sector. The EI is the leading chartered professional membership body for the energy industry, supporting over 19,000 individuals working in or studying energy and 250 companies worldwide. The EI provides learning and networking opportunities to support professional development, as well as professional recognition and technical and scientific knowledge resources on energy in all its forms and applications.
Structure
A Royal Charter membership organisation, the Energy Institute provides a wealth of expertise in energy matters, serving as a home for energy professionals and a scientific and technical reservoir for industry. It is licensed by the Engineering Council to offer Chartered, Incorporated and Engineering Technician status to engineers and also by the Science Council and Society for the Environment to offer registration as Chartered Scientist and Chartered Environmentalist. The EI is an international organisation serving its members in around 80 countries.
Membership
The EI has over 19,000 members around the world. It was formed in 2003 from a merger between the Institute of Petroleum and the Institute of Energy. The formation of the EI reflects the increasing convergence of various sectors of the UK energy industry. The EI offers three pre professional grades of membership: Affiliate, Graduate and Student, along with a selection of professional grades. The professional grades are: Fellow (FEI), Fellow Chartered Engineer (CEng FEI), Fellow Chartered Scientist (CSci FEI), Member (MEI), Member Chartered Engineer (CEng MEI), Member Chartered Scientist (CSci MEI) Member or Fellow and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv MEI or FEI), Technician Member (TMEI) and Technician Member Engineering Technician (EngTech TMEI).
Centenary
2014 marks 100 years since the EI’s oldest founding institution was formed. The centenary celebrations throughout 2014 will focus on the theme of ‘Looking back to look forward’ and will include a series of high-profile interviews and articles, reflecting on the energy industry’s crucial contribution to society over the years and how the past can inform the future. Members will also share their own recollections of key milestones in the history of the sector.
EI Knowledge Service
The EI Knowledge Service (EIKS) curates, develops and disseminates current and unbiased information on energy in all its forms and applications. The range and depth of information and knowledge held by the EI and its membership is an invaluable resource for supporting and advising members, stakeholders and the general public. Research into a range of topical energy issues is developed under the guidance of the Energy Advisory Panel (EAP).
The EI's extensive resource of information, statistics and reference material relating to all sectors of the energy industry is available online at knowledge.energyinst.org, including a new member service – the Energy Matrix. This online tool, which contains over 80,000 records and is continually updated, enables members to search across the EI’s entire database and archive, or browse by theme. The Matrix houses published academic resources, news and abstracts, EI training and events, periodicals, data sheets, and more. Data sheets on 80 topics are also available via email subscription on topics including renewable energy, electricity, coal, nuclear, and oil and gas.
The EI also houses a library which holds one of the most comprehensive collections of published material on the energy industry, covering the entire energy system. The collection dates from the mid-19th Century to the present day.
Publications
The EI publishes two membership magazines; Petroleum Review and Energy World. A range of supplements, including the Retail Marketing Survey, Future Skills, Future Energy, Future Fuels and Future Refining are produced to accompany these magazines throughout the year. The Journal of the Energy Institute publishes peer reviewed content relating to energy technology and theory.
The EI produces an extensive range of technical guidance, standards, and research reports for the energy sector. The technical work undertaken by the EI is defined by it Scientific and Technical Committee (STAC), funded by EI Technical Partners and coordinated by a number of technical sub-committees, supported by EI staff. The EI co-ordinates input into the work of national and international standards organisations (such as BSI, CEN and ISO) and works in cooperation with other associations and international partners (including API, OGP and ASTM). The aim of the technical work programme is to provide the international energy industry with cost-effective value adding knowledge on key current and future health, safety and environment issues.
The EI works in partnership with Shell to support and develop 'Hearts and Minds', and award winning toolkit intended to help organisations to improve their HSE performance.
Technical activities
Each year, the EI undertakes a focused technical work programme to provide industry with cost-effective, value-adding knowledge on key current and future issues affecting those operating in the energy sector, both in the UK and internationally. This activity is defined by the EI’s Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), which consists of senior energy industry representatives collectively offering guidance and advice to the EI’s technical committees responsible for implementing the work. The results of the work are made available through our technical publications and events such as conferences and workshops.
Events
The EI offers a range of conferences, seminars, dinners, lunches and other events dealing with all sectors of the energy business and catering for the various interests of its members and guests.
International Petroleum (IP) Week is one of the highlights in the EI annual events calendar. This three-day programme in February provides an intensive week of conferences and seminars as well as networking events. IP Week attracts over 2,000 key influencers and senior decision-makers from the global oil and gas industry and covers key topics including upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas, as well as technology, finance and investment. It also features seminars on specific regions such as Africa, Asia Pacific, Russia, CIS, the Arctic and the Middle East. The event concludes with the IP Week Dinner, the largest in the oil and gas industry, which attracts a prestigious audience of over 1,300 guests from all over the world.
The EI Awards are run every year to recognise and reward innovation and excellence demonstrated by both individuals and organisations in the energy industry. The Awards presentation ceremony is held in November every year to celebrate the winners from across eight EI Awards categories.
Training and professional development
The EI offers a range of oil and gas and energy management training courses along with providing professional development tools and support.
