Enna Kodumai Saravanan Idhu (Tamil: என்ன கொடுமை சரவணன் இது; abbreviated to EKSI) is a quote from the 2005 Tamil film Chandramukhi spoken by the character Senthilnathan, played by Prabhu Ganesan. The line has gained popularity[1] as an expression of irony or surprise.[2]
Origin
In the film, actor Prabhu Ganesan exclaims this to his friend Saravanan, portrayed by Rajinikanth. He says this dialogue, when he comes to know that his wife Ganga, played by Jyothika, has an alternate personality called "Chandramukhi".
"Enna Kodumai Saravanan Idhu" literally means "What atrocity is this, Saravanan?" and is roughly the equivalent to the English expression, "What the heck, Saravanan?" Saravanan, a name of the Hindu God Murugan, is also a frequently used personal name among Tamil people.
Other usage
The line, however, gained notable attention and popularity, after being varied slightly to "Enna Kodumai, Sir", used by comedian Premji Amaran in the comedy film, Chennai 600028 (2007).[3][4][5][6] The line is reused by Premji in nearly all his subsequent comedy roles, in films such as Santosh Subramaniam, Goa and Mankatha. In the 2007 film Sivaji: The Boss, actor Livingston uses the variant "Enna Kodomai Saravanan Sir." Enna Kodumai Saravanan Ithu is also abbreviated to "EKSI" in chat and SMS language.
