EnterpriseDB is a privately held American company[2] that provides enterprise class software subscriptions, support, and tools for PostgreSQL. The company sells its software products through subscriptions with support and updates included. There are two main subscription products,[3] Postgres Plus Enterprise Edition and Postgres Plus Standard Edition. Postgres Plus Standard Edition includes open source PostgreSQL, tools for performance, scalability, high availability, and management and support and updates. The tools include EDB Postgres Enterprise Manager for managing/monitoring/tuning large-scale Postgres installations. Postgres Plus Enterprise Edition includes the components of Standard Edition plus database compatibility for Oracle, performance and advanced security features not available in PostgreSQL and other features for manageability not available in PostgreSQL.

EnterpriseDB also has two editions of a cloud database.[4] These are Postgres Plus Cloud Database Basic and Postgres Plus Cloud Database Advanced. The Management Console in the cloud products provision PostgreSQL and Postgres Plus Advanced Server databases (with database compatibility for Oracle) in single instances, high availability clusters, or development sandboxes for Database-as-a-Service environments. In addition, the company offers PostgreSQL 24×7 support, training, and professional services such as RemoteDBA, Architectural Health Check, migration services and more.

EnterpriseDB was positioned in the Leaders Quadrant in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for operational database management systems in October 2014 and again in September 2015.[5]

History

Denis Lussier and Andy Astor founded EnterpriseDB in 2004[6] with the goal of "disrupting the database oligopoly with an equally capable product based on open-source principles and development that offered dramatic cost-savings."[7] The company chose PostgreSQL as its technology foundation given PostgreSQL's record over 20 years of large-scale commercial deployments, its thriving developer community, and its reputation as the most robust open-source database available.

Products

EnterpriseDB offers two distributions based on PostgreSQL that have additional features and commercial support. These distributions are available for free download and are supported on several different platforms, including Linux, Windows, Solaris and HP-UX.[8] They include connectors for the most common programming languages and environments, including: JDBC, ODBC, .NET, ESQL / C++, Perl, Python and PHP.

EnterpriseDB also offers services and support options for Postgres, including remote DBA services, tuning, developer support, DBA certification and training.
